Marathon field hockey wins hard fought game vs. Moravia to advance to the sectional championship (photos included)

The 2nd-seeded Marathon Lady Olympians won a close sectional semifinal game against 3rd-seed Moravia on Tuesday (October 24th) with a score of 1-0. 

The Section IV Class C semifinal game was played at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary school. 

It was a well fought out game with both teams having chances to score at any moment. 

Marathon ended the game with 5 shots and 2 corners in comparison to Moravia’s 6 shots and 8 corners. 

Marathon junior Catherine Newkirk was then able to score the only goal of the game late in the third quarter to make it 1-0. 

Moravia would go on the attack to try to get a goal of their own and tie the game, but Marathon’s defense stood strong to hold the 1-0 lead until the end. 

Marathon goalkeeper Cassandra Forrest made 5 saves in the game, while Emily Griffin recorded 6 saves for Moravia. Marathon’s Abby Edsall also made 1 defensive save in the game.

Marathon is scheduled to play in the sectional championship against No.1 seed Whitney Point on Saturday (October 28th). 

According to Section IV, The championship game will take place at Tioga high school at 11am on Saturday. (Note: start time of the game is subject to change).
