The paving of Main Street in the city of Cortland is currently underway on Tuesday.

According to Crown City Rising, crews from the city’s department of public works (DPW) are laying down temporary paving on Main Street. The paving process will result in no parking on both sides of the street, and include lane shifts and temporary detours.

City DPW announced on its Facebook page that with the department focused on the paving project, there will be no leaf pickup on Tuesday (Nov. 7) and Wednesday (Nov. 8). Leaf pickup will continue on Thursday (Nov. 9).

Suit-Kote CEO Frank Suits, Jr. recently donated 800 tons of asphalt to the city for the paving project. The donation is in honor of his father Frank Suits Sr., the founder of Suit-Kote.

“My father was proud to make this area home to his company and to have a partnership with the city of Cortland going back to 1960,” Frank Suits Jr. said. “Investing in the community was important to my father and I know he would want us to invest in the revitalization of Main Street and the city’s infrastructure improvements.”

According to Cortland mayor Scott Steve, the donation of asphalt will save the city more than $35,000.

“Frank understands the importance of this project to the community and the challenges the city faces,” Steve said. “The offer is a testament to the contributions Frank Suits Sr. and the company he founded have made to the community.”

The release noted that Tuesday’s paving project marks the end of the 2023 construction season and the completion of most underground utility and infrastructure work.

According to the release, the temporary pavement will be milled next season. It will be returned to Suit-Kote’s facilities, where it will be recycled.

“We are excited to utilize our long standing practice of recycling which was begun by my father in the 1980’s,” Frank Suits, Jr. said. “This recycling not only saves money, but saves our natural resources. We are pleased to partner with the city on this.”
