The Cortland County Clerk is reinvigorating a Veterans-based program that was established over a decade ago.

The county’s “Return the Favor” program was formed in 2010. According to a release, under Military Law, a veteran may file its discharge papers at the County Clerk’s office, free of charge.

The original document is returned to the Veteran with a copy, and also kept permanent and confidential at the county clerk’s office. A certified copy of the discharge papers can be obtained by the Veteran or specific members of its family anytime at no cost, the release noted.

Once a Veteran files its discharge papers, they can use an issued Veteran ID card that enables them to obtain discounts at various businesses in Cortland County and nearby counties. A list of participating businesses is provided, but other businesses may also honor the card.

“Not only does this show support to our veterans, merchants have reported an increase in sales and the veteran’s discharge papers are always available if needed,” the release stated.
