The Cincinnatus Lady Lions were crowned state champions for Class D over the weekend after defeating Section II champion Fort Ann in the semifinal game, and Section V champion Fillmore in the state championship final.

Both of Cincinnatus’ state semifinal and championship games were played at Homer high school.

Cincinnatus vs. Fort Ann (Class D State Semifinal)

Cincinnatus punched a one way ticket into the Class D State Championship after defeating Fort Ann in the semifinal round of the state tournament. The Lady Lions won the game with a score of 6-0 on Saturday (November 11th).

Cincinnatus took control of the game early, as they ended up scoring 2 goals in the first half.

The Lady Lions kept their intensity at a high level, after scoring 4 additional goals in the second half to get the shutout win over the Section II champions.

Cincinnatus was led by Cassia Schuyler (4 goals & 1 assist), Peyton Stith (1 goal), Lucy Finch (1 goal), Jocelyn Turshman (2 assists), Ava Larrabee (1 assist), and Sidney Glover (3 saves).

Cincinnatus vs. Fillmore (Class D State Championship)

The Lady Lions were crowned state champions after beating Section V champion Fillmore with a score of 3-0 on Sunday (November 12th).

The game started with both teams having minimal ball possession. However, Cincinnatus’ Cassia Schuyler opened up the score with about 15 minutes left in the first half, as she dribbled past defenders and shot the ball past Fillmore’s goalkeeper Preslee Miller.

Then before the end of the first half, Cincinnatus’ Ava Larrabee scored a goal off of an assist from Jocelyn Turshman to make it 2-0.

The Lady Lions kept pressure on Fillmore for the rest of the game. Fillmore was only able to get 2 shots on goal in the second half that were saved by Cincinantus’ goalkeeper Sidney Glover.

Fillmore pushed their entire team upfront, as they were running desperate for a goal to keep them in the game with little time left.

This allowed Cincinnatus to get a counterattack going, which Payton Landers ended up scoring to make it 3-0 and ultimately win the game and become state champions.

Cincinnatus’ 2023 Season

With this state title run, Cincinnatus ended their unbeaten season with an overall record of 22-0-1.

This state title is Cincinnatus’ first state championship in school history.
