A man was in a standoff with police officers while in a taxi on Thursday (Nov. 30), according to a City of Cortland Police report.

The report stated that Christopher C. Gillette, 40, was holding two individuals “against their will” at a residence on Elm Street in Cortland. According to the report, Gillette was armed with a knife and potentially a firearm.

The report continued by saying that police officers were able to get the two individuals with Gillette “out of the residence without incident.” It was discovered that Gillette had an order of protection against him with one of the subjects in the residence, the report added.

After a period of time, the report noted, Gillette left in a taxi. Police officers stopped the taxi on Clinton Avenue. Following a two-hour standoff where Gillette had a knife in a manner to harm himself, the report noted, police officers took him into custody. No injuries were reported.

Gillette was charged with first-degree criminal contempt and aggravated family offense (Both Class-E Felonies), and obstruction of governmental administration (a Class-A Misdemeanor).

Gillette was arraigned in Cortland city court and sent to Cortland County Jail without bail.
