City of Cortland officials on Tuesday honored the three college students who provided aid to the victims of a house fire.

Jessie Ciufo, Holly Wright and Seylah Ferguson – all students at SUNY Cortland – provided comfort to the 12 children and family members that were displaced from a house fire at Clayton Avenue on Nov. 18.

The students welcomed the two families into their home as firefighters worked to contain the fire and the city’s K-9 officers worked to treat and resuscitate the family’s pets.

“The whole community responded with kindness and generosity to assist the children and family, and these students showed how they are part of our community and are examples of good citizenship and Cortland helping neighbors in need,” City mayor Scott Steve said.

According to a City of Cortland Fire Department report, the fire was ruled accidental. The victims made it safely out of the house. Unfortunately, two dogs passed away after they succumbed to the heat and smoke.

Mayor Steve and representatives from the city fire department recognized the three students with plaques and gave them gift cards to restaurants in the area for their act of kindness.

Below is audio from Tuesday’s meeting, as city officials recognized the three SUNY Cortland students in a small ceremony.
