Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (December 16th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Girls Wrestling: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Blindman's Girls Tournament)

The Homer Lady Trojans participated in the Blindman's Girls Tournament at Cicero North Syracuse on Saturday. 

According to Homer head coach Anna Cummings, four of Homer’s wrestlers placed in the tournament. 

  • Lilly Sorenson won 1st overall in the 185 lbs weight class
  • Alisa Gonzalez won 1st place in the 138 lbs weight class
  • Gracie Newman placed 3rd in the 132 lbs weight class
  • Molly Sorenson placed 3rd in the 152 lbs weight class

Varsity Boys Wrestling: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Cuneen Doane Tournament)

The Homer boys wrestling team participated in the Cuneen Doane Tournament at Walton high school on Saturday. 

Individual highlights:

  • 131: Hunter Lines won 1st place after defeating Justin Harrison of Port Jervis in the championship final by Decision (5-0)
  • 170: Christopher Slade placed 5th after winning the 5th place match against Julian Spizzirri of Marathon by Decision (3-0)
  • 215: Owen Burhans placed 5th after beating Gabe Gillis of Morrisville Eaton by Decision (5-1)
  • 152: Daniel Hardesty placed 6th after losing in the 5th place match against Keian Collins of Vernon Verona Sherrill by Fall (2:04)

Varsity Boys Wrestling: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Cuneen Doane Tournament)

The Marathon Olympians participated in the Cuneen Doane Tournament at Walton high school on Saturday. 

Individual highlights:

  • 108: Simon Donah (Marathon) came in 6th place after losing to Caden Higley (Sidney) in the 5th place match - Fall (4:40)
  • 116: Melodie Sutton (Marathon) placed 5th after beating Jacob Jones (Morrisville Eaton) in the 5th place match - Fall (2:15)
  • 131: Brendan Gumaer (Marathon) won 3rd place after defeating Carl Harold (Susquehanna Valley) in the 3rd place match- Fall (2:35)
  • 138: Zander Sutton (Marathon) placed 4th after losing to Mark Moelder (Susquehanna Valley) in the 3rd place match - Fall (1:59)
  • 170: Julian Spizzirri (Marathon) placed 6th after losing to Christopher Slade (Homer) in the 5th place match - Decision (3-0)
  • 190: Dawsyn Cole (Marathon) won 5th place after defeating Edward Morley (Pine Bush) in the 5th place match - Fall (3:13)

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Schools (George Constantino Memorial)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the George Constantino Memorial meet at Onondaga Community College on Saturday. 

Here are some highlights from both Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in the weight throw event (Result - 55’3”). He also came in 2nd place in the shot put event (Result - 44’10.75”) 
  • Michael Dearie came in 2nd place in the weight throw event (Result - 50’11”). He also placed 4th in the shot put event (Result - 40’0”)
  • Jack Phelan finished in 2nd place in the triple jump event (Result - 41’2”)

Cortland Girls

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Schools (George Constantino Memorial)

The Homer Trojans competed in the George Constantino Memorial meet at Onondaga Community College this past Saturday. 

Here are some highlights from both Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Tasker Dennis placed 6th in the shot put event (Result - 38’10”). His throw was a season best. He also placed 7th in the weight throw event (Result - 42’4”)
  • Gunnar Tyrrell came in 7th place in the long jump event (Result - 18’3.75”). His performance qualifies him for the Sectional Championships.
  • Logan Griffin recorded a throw of 36’7.25” in the shot put event, which qualifies him for the Sectional Championships

Homer Girls

  • Molly McMasters placed 2nd in the weight throw event (Result - 33’6”). She also placed 6th in the shot put event (Result - 28’5”). Her shot put throw was a personal best.
  • Izzy Tutino finished in 3rd place in the 300 meter run (Time - 45.27). She also placed 6th in the 55 meter dash (Time - 7.88). Both of her performances were personal bests, and qualified her for the Sectional Championships.
  • Ingrid Aagaard came in 4th place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:14.17). She also finished in 7th place in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 5:23.04).  Her 1,000 meter time was a personal best. Her 1,500 meter time qualified for the Sectional Championships.
  • Hannah Bouwens placed 5th in the shot out event (Result - 29’3”). She also came in 6th place in the weight throw event (result - 27’7”). Her shot put throw was a personal best. 
  • Emma Effinger (30.9), Caitlin McCloy (29.8), Sophie Kennett (31.4), and Ingrid Aagaard (28.8) ran an official time of 2:00.96 to place 6th in the 4x200 relay. 
  • Mia Knight (2:59.9), Lizzie O’Donnell (2:52.5), Haley Tucker (3:08.8), and Amelia Wagner (2:54.2) placed 7th in the 4x800 meter relay with an official time of 11:55.33.

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools (Winter Classic)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the Winter Classic meet at SUNY Cortland on Saturday. 

Here are some highlights from both Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall won 1st place in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 10:51.84). He also placed 3rd in the pole vault event (Result - 9’6”). His pole vault performance broke the Marathon indoor track record. 

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco won 1st place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:54.29). She also placed 5th in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”).
