Flash flood warning extended for Cortland County, surrounding counties

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton issued a flash flood warning for Cortland County that will go until 2 p.m. on Monday. The warning was initially issued from 6 to 9:15 a.m., but it has been extended due to continuous heavy rainfall.

About 9 a.m. Monday, NWS Binghamton’s doppler radar indicated heavy rain across the warned area. The report noted that between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen so far.

An additional inch of rain is expected in the area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin soon, the report noted. Flash flooding occurs in small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, along with other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

  • Western Chenango County
  • Southwestern Madison County
  • Southern Onondaga County
  • Tioga County
  • Eastern Tompkins County
  • Eastern Bradford County (PA)
  • Northwestern Lackawanna County (PA)
  • Susquehanna County (PA)
  • Wyoming County (PA)

“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles,” noted in the release in terms of precautionary/preparedness tips.
