River flood warning issued for Cortland County

A river flood warning has been issued for Cortland County and is in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 20).

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton noted the warning is in effect due to the Tioughnioga River rising, with minor flooding already occurring and more expected throughout the day.

According to NWS Binghamton, the average flood stage is eight feet. As of 1:31 a.m. Tuesday, the stage was 9.1 feet and is expected to rise to a crest of 9.5 later in the morning.

If the river reaches 10 feet, it becomes a moderate flood stage. This could lead to flooded roads and basements in the area. An update on the river and flood stage is scheduled for 2 p.m. later today.

“Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive cars through flooded areas. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding,” noted in the NWS Binghamton release in terms of precautionary/preparedness actions.
