City of Cortland police chief Paul Sandy said at Thursday’s Police Commission meeting that his staff raised over $10,000 during No Shave November.

Through fundraising and donations from various organizations and businesses in Cortland, Sandy said his department raised about $12,000. The money will be split and given to Paige’s Butterfly Run and Griffin’s Guardians, two grassroots organizations in Syracuse that raise funds for pediatric cancer research.

Sandy noted that the city police department started its No Shave November initiative in late October and extended it into this month. Sandy said that he told his staff that they had to raise a certain amount of money to extend the public awareness.

No Shave November encourages individuals to grow out their beard or hair for cancer awareness.

“I gave them the incentive to go out and raise more money,” Sandy said. “It worked out.”

Sandy mentioned on Thursday that his department’s drive to raise money for a good cause will continue into the New Year. He noted that the goal is to have his staff raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, another organization that supports childhood cancer research, in January and February.

Anyone from the city police department who participates can take part in the annual St. Baldrick’s event at the Red Jug Pub on March 12.
