Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (December 27th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday's events:

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams Snowman Showdown Invitational

The Marathon Olympians hosted the Snowman Showdown Invitational at SUNY Cortland on Wednesday.

The Marathon boys’ team placed 8th overall, while the Marathon girls’ team placed 9th overall. 

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall finished in 2nd place in both the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:09.11) and the pole vault event (Result - 9’0”)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco placed 4th in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”). She also came in 5th place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:53.79)

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams Snowman Showdown Invitational

The Homer Trojans competed in the Snowman Showdown Invitational at SUNY Cortland.

The Homer boys’ team placed 5th overall, while the Homer girls’ team placed 1st overall. 

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Gunnar Tyrrell won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result - 38’3.75”). He also placed 6th in the 55 meter dash (Time - 6.97). His 55 time was a personal best and a  new sophomore class record
  • Tasker Dennis won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 36’2.75”)
  • In the Sprint Medley Relay, Liam Zech (62.2), Garrett Berthelot (29.9), Gunnar Tyrrell (26.0), and Michael Thalheimer (2:41.6) placed 4th overall with an official time of 4:39.29
  • In the Sprint Medley Relay, Tristyn Henkel (63.0), Donavin Brown (29.0), Nick Costa (26.2), and Aidan Small (2:46.7) came in 5th place with an official time of 4:45.12
  • Garrett Berthelot came in 5th place in the triple jump event (Result - 28’6.25”). His performance was a personal best
  • Donavin Brown placed 6th in both the long jump event (Result - 14’7”) and the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 10.57). His 55 meter hurdles time was a personal best.

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in both the 600 meter run (Time - 1:45.33) and the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:20.55). She also placed 2nd in the 300 meter run (Time - 46.36).
  • Izzy Tutino won the 300 meter run (Time - 46.10). She also placed 4th in the 55 meter dash (Time - 7.92) and came in 6th place in the long jump event (Result - 13’7.5”). Her long jump performance was a personal best
  • Hannah Bouwens came in 2nd place in the shot put event (Result - 29’1.5”)
  • Molly McMasters placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 27’11”)
  • Lizzie O’Donnell finished in 4th place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:51.52). She also placed 5th in the shot put event (Result - 26’2”). Both of her performances were personal bests and qualified her for the sectional championships
  • Maggie Mahunik placed 4th in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:20.79). She also came in 6th place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 4:02.39)
  • Mikayla Smith placed 4th in the triple jump event (Result - 28’9.75”)
  • In the Sprint Medley Relay, Mia Knight (83.8), Emma Effinger (30.1), Lizzie O’Donnell (30.6), and Amelia Wagner (2:54.45) finished in 4th place with an official time of 5:19.56
  • Olivia Congdon placed 6th in the shot put event (Result - 24’2”) Her performance was a personal best
  • Emma Effinger came in 6th place in the triple jump event (Result - 27’10.5”)
  • Haley Tucker finished in 6th place in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:30.58)

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs. Dryden (Holiday Hustle Tournament)

The Marathon Lady Olympians won 47-33 in the first round of the Marathon Holiday Hustle Tournament Wednesday evening against Dryden. 

“Overall, for not shooting our best this is a great team win and we dug in to grind it out, and make it to the championship game of the tournament," said Marathon head coach Beth Anne Duncan

Marathon was led by Abby Ensign (24 points), Addison Oram (11 points), and Anna Hoyt (5 points). 

Dryden was led by Laci Prignon (9 points), Olivia Sheive (8 points), and Guiliana Pascarella (7 points). 

With this result, Marathon now holds a 6-2 overall record. 

Marathon will play the championship game of the tournament against Tully at Marathon high school tonight (Thursday, December 28th) at 6:30pm.

Varsity Boys Basketball: McGraw vs. Solvay (Onondaga Central Holiday Tournament)

The McGraw Eagles defeated Solvay in the first round of the Onondaga Central Holiday Tournament with a score of 56-53. 

McGraw was led by Caleb Epp (14 points), Jaydon Bassett (12 points), and Dylan Truman (10 points). 

Solvay was led by Chris Nichols (17 points) and Jairo DeJesus Jr (14 points). 

With this win, McGraw improved to an overall record of 6-1. 

McGraw will play in the championship game of the Holiday Tournament at Onondaga high school today (Thursday, December 28th) against Onondaga at 3pm.
