Cortland mayor, council members take oaths of office

Cortland mayor Scott Steve and city council members officially took their oaths of office before the start of the first Common Council meeting of 2024.

Steve and eight council members, sworn in by city judge Elizabeth Burns on Tuesday, will serve a 4-year term in the city. 

The mayor – along with council members Wayne Schutt, Katy Silliman, MaryClare Pennello, Pat Lane, Seth Thompson, Bill Carpenter, Troy Beckwith and Tom Michales – were all re-elected after they previously served a 2-year term.

At Tuesday’s meeting, council members unanimously approved Schutt as the city’s new acting mayor. The 1st-ward alderman becomes the new deputy mayor
