Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 13th & 14th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s and Sunday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Fred Kirschenheiter Memorial)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the morning session of the Fred Kirschenheiter Memorial meet at Onondaga Community College on Saturday.  

Both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams placed 7th overall

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Jack Phelan won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result - 43’0”)
  • Michael Dearie finished in 2nd place in the weight throw event (Result - 49’10.25”). He also placed 4th in the shot put event (Result - 41’8.25”)
  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in the weight throw event (Result - 56-8.50). He also came in 6th place in the shot put event (Result - 38’5.25”)
  • Spenser Dodds came in 4th place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 2:54.31)

Cortland Girls

  • Campbell Bush came in 2nd place in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 9.68)
  • Sarah Williams finished in 6th place in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 10.72)
  • Rileigh Madden placed 2nd in both the long jump event (Result - 14’10.50”) and the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”)
  • Morgann Doane placed 7th in the long jump event (Result - 14’5.50”)

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Fred Kirschenheiter Memorial)

The Homer Trojans competed in the afternoon session of the Fred Kirschenheiter Memorial meet at Onondaga Community College this past Saturday.  

The Homer girls’ team placed 3rd overall, while the Homer boys’ team placed 10th overall.

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Tasker Dennis came in 4th place in the weight throw event (Result - 44’6.50”). He also placed 5th place in the shot put event (Result - 37’7”)
  • Anderson Lowell placed 6th in the shot put event (Result - 37’6.25”)
  • Homer’s 4x400 meter relay team (Nick Costa, Donavin Brown, Tristyn Henkel & Liam Zech) came in 6th place with an official time of 4:10.66.

Homer Girls

  • Hannah Bouwens won 1st place in the shot put event (Result -  29’4”)
  • Molly McMasters finished in 2nd place in both the shot put event (Result - 29’2”) and the weight throw event (Result - 33’7.50”)
  • Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:42.29). He also placed 3rd in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:16.79)
  • Izzy Tutino came in 5th place in the long jump event (Result - 14’11”)
  • ​​Sophie Kennett placed 6th in the long jump event (Result - 14’7.50”)
  • Hannah Bouwens came in 5th place in the weight throw event (Result - 31’3”)
  • Homer’s 4x400 meter relay team (Izzy Tutino, Lizzie O’Donnell, Emma Effinger & Ingrid Aagaard) finished in 3rd place with an official time of 4:26.50. 

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Quinney Invitational)

The Marathon Olympians hosted the Quinney Invitational at SUNY Cortland on Saturday.  

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall came in 3rd place in both the 1,600 meter run (Time - 4:58.76) and the pole vault event (Result - 9’6”)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco finished in 2nd place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:53.94). She also placed 3rd in the pole vault event (Result - 8’6”)

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Sandy Creek

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions rallied back to win against Sandy Creek in five sets on the road this past Saturday. With this win, Cincinnatus improved to a 10-2 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Allyson St.Germain (21 kills, 25 digs & 4 aces), Payton Gerrard (2 kills, 24 digs, 1 assist & 3 aces), Kaedence Latta (4 kills, 3 blocks, 12 digs & 26 assists), and Cassia Schuyler (1 kill, 22 digs & 9 aces). 

Sandy Creek was led by Krislynn Harlow (8 kills, 13 digs, 2 assists & 5 aces), Phoenecia Hathway (12 kills, 2 blocks, 7 digs & 3 aces), and Makayla Glazier (5 digs, 26 assists & 9 aces). 

Up next, Cincinnatus will play DeRuyter at DeRuyter high school on Thursday (January 18th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Canastota

The Cincinnatus boys’ volleyball team fell to an overall record of 0-4 after losing in three sets to Canastota. 

Cincinnatus was led by Hunter Downes (3 blocks & 3 digs), Draven Reynolds (1 kill, 1 assist & 1 ace), and Alan Cook (5 digs). 

Canastota was led by Joey Warner (3 kills, 4 assists & 1 digs), Kenneth Relyea (7 aces, 2 kills, 1 block & 1 dig), and Jesse DeMaintenon (5 kills & 1 assist). 

Cincinnatus is now scheduled to host Westmoreland at Cincinnatus high school tonight (January 15th) at 5:30pm. 

Varsity Wrestling: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Cazenovia Invitational)

Members of the Cortland wrestling team participated in the Cazenovia Invitational on Saturday. 

According to Cortland head coach Clint Morse, three of Cortland’s varsity wrestlers participated in the invitational. The three Cortland wrestlers were Jackson Marks (124 lbs), Nick Hines (138 lbs), and Avery Canzano (190 lbs). 

All three of Cortland’s wrestlers placed at their respective weight classes on Saturday:

  • Avery Canzano won 1st place at 190 lbs
  • Jackson Marks placed 3rd at 124 lbs
  • Nick Hines placed 5th at 138 lbs

Varsity Wrestling: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Dan Wickham Tournament)

The Marathon Olympians participated in the Dan Wickham Tournament at Unatego high school. 

Here are some highlights and results from Marathon wrestling team:

  • Braydon Homer won 1st place in the 138 lbs weight class after defeating Shane Howell (Unatego) by Decision (6-2)
  • Julian Spizzirri placed 4th in the 170 lbs weight class after losing to Christopher Doshna (Marcellus-Onondaga) in the 3rd place match by Fall (3:34)
  • Dawsyn Cole came in 6th place in the 190 lbs weight class after losing in the 5th place match against Gabe Yale (Maine-Endwell) by Fall (1:47)

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cincinnatus vs Multiple Teams (Utica Notre Dame in the Juggler Classic Tournament)

The Cincinnatus Lions participated in the Utica Notre Dame in the Juggler Classic Tournament over the weekend. The first round of the tournament was played on Saturday (January 13th), and the championship and consolation games were played on Sunday (January 14th).

With these two losses, Cincinnatus' record has fallen to 4-8.

The Cincinnatus Lions lost in the first round of the tournament against Utica Notre Dame with a score of 47-41. 

Cincinnatus was led by Canden Stafford (12 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists & 2 steals), Jack Stafford (12 points, 6 rebounds & 3 assists), and Trevor Shevalier (6 points, 5 rebounds & 4 blocks).

Utica Notre Dame was led by Christian Babiarz (19 points) & Carlloyd Gowe (12 points). 

Cincinnatus vs. Utica Notre Dame (Consolation Game)

Cincinnatus lost the consolation game of the tournament with a score of 51-42 against Oriskany on Sunday. 

Cincinnatus was led by Jack Stafford (15 points), Zack Streichert (9 points), and Canden Stafford (8 points). 

Oriskany was led by Edward Wright (19 points), Nicholas Hays (15 points), and Chase Koenig (10 points).
