Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 17th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Wrestling: Cortland vs. Homer

The Homer Trojans defeated county rival Cortland (Purple Tigers) in a dual match at Cortland junior-senior high school Wednesday night. Homer won the dual match with a team score of 60-16. 

Here are the results from each match:

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Twilight Invite)

The Marathon Olympians hosted the Twilight Invite at SUNY Cortland Wednesday night. 

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall placed 3rd in both the 400 meter run (Time - 59.71) and the pole vault event (Result - 9’7”). He also came in 4th place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:18.72)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco came in 2nd place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’7”). She also finished in 3rd place in the 400 meter run (Time - 1:09.19)
  • Sophia Hansen placed 5th in the triple jump event (Result - 27’2.50”)

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Twilight Invite)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed at the Twilight Invite at SUNY Cortland on Wednesday. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Jack Phelan won 1st place in both the 55 meter dash (Time - 6.91) and the triple jump event (Result - 41’4”)
  • Feodor Kalytyuk placed 5th in the 55 meter dash (Time - 7.53)
  • Spenser Dodds finished in 2nd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:14.72)
  • Stellan Seward came in 5th place in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 11.23)
  • Michael Dearie won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 41’8”)
  • Bryan Honan came in 2nd place in the shot put event (Result - 40’11”)
  • Liam Grant placed 6th in the triple jump event (Result - 34’5.25”)

Cortland Girls

  • Campbell Bush won 1st place in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 9.53). She also came in 4th place in the 55 meter dash (Time - 7.92)
  • Isabella Sisting came in 4th place in the 200 meter run (Time - 29.32). She also placed 5th in the 55 meter dash (Time - 8.11)
  • Lexi Saunders finished in 6th place in both the 55 meter dash (Time - 8.14) and the triple jump event (Result - 25’2.75”)
  • Brianna Bergene placed 4th in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:50.43)
  • Ruby Mullally came in 4th place in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:20.16). She also came in 6th place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:53.92)
  • Ella Starinsky placed 6th in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 7:06.31) 
  • Rileigh Madden placed 3rd in the long jump event (Result - 15’5.50”). She also came in 4th place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’1”)
  • Ashley Merritt placed 5th in the pole vault event (Result - 7’1”)
  • Morgann Doane placed 5th in the high jump event (Result - 4’3”)
  • Alivia Reif came in 4th place in the shot put event (Result - 22’3”)
  • Maude Terwilliger came in 2nd place in the triple jump event (Result - 29’0.25”)

Varsity Boys Basketball: Marathon vs. Edmeston

The Marathon Olympians lost 52-53 against Edmeston Wednesday night, making them fall to an overall record of 5-7. 

Marathon was led by Zachary Birdsall (20 points), Bryce Hartman (17 points), Jacob Byron (11 points), Camdyn Kashuba (2 points), and Bode Carter (2 points).

Edmeston was led by Gavin McEnroe (18 points), Izek Richards (14 points), Landon Wust (10 points), Braymon Clark (6 points), and Gunner Schoellig (4 points). 

Marathon is scheduled to host Moravia Central at Marathon high school on Friday (January 19th) at 7:15pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: McGraw vs. Cincinnatus

The McGraw Lady Eagles defeated the Cincinnatus Lady Lions with a score of 28-9. With this result, McGraw improved to a 5-8 record, while Cincinnatus fell to 4-10. 

McGraw was led by Hannah Wilson (9 points), Lexi McCall (8 points), Leah Terwilliger (5 points), Madison Sweeney (4 points), and Eden Sears (2 points).

Cincinnatus was led by Sidney Glover (3 points), Natalie Fritts (2 points), Lydia Schutt (2 points), and Rachael Standish (2 points).

Up next, McGraw will host Otselic Valley at McGraw high school on Wednesday (January 31st) at 6pm; while Cincinnatus will play on the road against Otselic Valley on Tuesday (January 23rd) at 6pm. 

Varsity Ice Hockey: Cortland-Homer vs. New Hartford

The Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles fell to an overall record of 3-11 after losing to New Hartford with a score of 6-1. 

Cortland-Homer was led by Gabe O'Connor (1 goal), Brendan Andrews (1 assist), and Jack Mederios (39 saves).

New Hartford was led by Gavin Lapolla (2 goals), Jake Hill (2 assists), Anthony Falvo (2 assists), Sean Elbrecht (2 assists), William Picolla (1 goal), Chad Hull (1 goal), Daniel Achen (1 goal), Rowan Gall (1 goal), Dylan Joy (1 assist), and Derek Joy (26 saves). 

Cortland-Homer’s next game will be played at the JM McDonald Sports Complex in Cortland against Clinton tonight (January 18th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Ice Hockey: McGraw vs. Sherburne-Earlville

The McGraw Lady Eagles lost against Sherburne-Earlville in three sets, making them fall to an overall record of 3-5 record. 

McGraw was led by Remington Stull (2 kills, 3 blocks, 1 dig, 4 assists & 2 aces), Myranda Murray (3 digs & 1 ace), Emmily Thomas (4 kills & 1 dig), and Mikenlee Ticknor (3 kills & 3 blocks).

McGraw will now take on Brookfield at McGraw high school tonight (January 18th) at 5:30pm.
