The Cortland girls basketball team moved up in this week’s New York State Sportswriters Association’s rankings.

The Purple Tigers, currently sporting an 11-1 record, are now ninth in the state in Class A. Cortland, ranked 10th in the state last week, beat Syracuse West by a 66-42 score on Jan. 19.

Other Section III teams in the Class A state rankings are Indian River (10-1) at No. 6 and Oneida (11-2) at No. 16. The Warriors handed the Purple Tigers their only loss (48-26) so far on Jan. 6.

Cortland’s quest to defend its sectional title from last season continues with a matchup against crosstown rival Homer on Thursday.
