County Sheriff: Cortland woman steals thousands in benefits

A Cortland woman was accused of stealing thousands of dollars in benefits.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s report stated that an investigation, with assistance from the Cortland County Department of Social Services, discovered that Shelana L. Cooney, 26, provided “fraudulent information” concerning her household income and composition.

According to the report, Cooney received $5,600 in benefits that she was not entitled to.

Cooney was arrested on Monday (Jan. 29) and charged with third-degree welfare fraud and grand larceny (Class-D Felonies), and three counts of first-degree offering a false instrument (a Class-E Felony). She was released and now due to appear in Cortland city court on Feb. 28.
