The number of parking tickets issued in the City of Cortland in 2023 totalled to a lesser amount in previous years, according to totals provided by city police.

In 2023, 4,508 parking tickets were issued in the city. This number is 857 more than the total in 2022 (5,365). Total numbers were significantly lower in 2020 (2,311 tickets) and 2021 (3,319 tickets) due to the covid pandemic.

At Monday’s Police Commission meeting, it was noted there were some factors in 2023’s parking ticket total. Factors included the construction on Main Street, the transition to the digital parking system and that most parking tickets were issued overnight.

The total number in 2023 is less than 5,000 for the 9th time in the past decade. It was also over 4,500 for the 4th time in 10 years, with totals in 2014 (5,115 tickets), 2015 (4,547 tickets) and 2022 (5,365 tickets).

According to a city police document of parking tickets issued, yearly totals date back to 1990. In that year (1990), city police issued 12,053 parking tickets. This was followed by 10,079 parking tickets issued in 1991.
