The Cortland Common Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed changing of speed limits on specific streets in the city.

The public hearing will take place prior to the city's council meeting on Tuesday (Feb. 6) at 6 p.m. Tuesday’s city council meeting agenda can be seen here.

City mayor Scott Steve and council members will look to move a proposal to reduce the speed limit from 30 to 25 miles-per-hour on Main Street and Miller Street

The potential change on Main Street is the stretch between the Clinton Avenue/Groton Avenue and Port Watson Street/Tompkins Street intersections. The speed limit reduction on Miller Street is being proposed due to drivers using the street to avoid the traffic light at the Homer Avenue/North Main Street/West Main Street intersection.

Since Main Street and Miller Street are city streets, Mayor Steve said that Cortland officials do not have to submit a speed limit reduction request to the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT).
