Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (February 2nd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Onondaga

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions played their last match of the regular season against Onondaga Friday night. Cincinnatus won their match in three straight sets (25-9, 25-18 & 25-13). 

With this win, Cincinnatus ended the regular season with an overall record of 15-2. 

Cincinnatus was led by Allyson St. Germain (6 aces, 8 kills, 1 block & 9 service points), Kaylee Brenchley (5 aces & 16 service points), Madelyn Pittsley (4 aces & 7 service points), Lucy Finch (2 kills & 2 blocks), and Kaedance Latta (2 aces, 13 assists, 2 kills & 13 service points).

According to Cincinnatus head coach Teresa Merihew, the Lady Lions finished first in both Class D Section III and the Central Counties League. 

The sectional seeding meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday (February 5th). 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: McGraw vs. Tully

The McGraw Lady Eagles ended their regular season with an overall record of 5-9 after losing to Tully in three straight sets (13-25, 14-25 & 10-25) on Friday.

The Section III seeding meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday (February 5th). 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon boys basketball team defeated Groton 49-38 Friday night, improving their overall record to 8-9. 

Marathon was led by Zachary Birdsall (11 points), Jacob Byron (10 points), Austin Poth (9 points), and Camdyn Kashuba (7 points).

Nick Karandeyev (9 points), Mike Lane (8 points), Conor Eldred (6 points), and Trenton Walker (6 points).

Marathon’s next game will be played against Southern Cayuga on the road this upcoming Tuesday (February 6th) at 7:15pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Eagles lost on the road against Otselic Valley with a score of 38-37, making them fall to a 9-5 record.

Up next, McGraw will host Madison at McGraw high school on Tuesday (February 6th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Lady Olympians fell to an overall record of 10-5 after losing to Groton with a score of 54-48. 

Abby Ensign (16 points), Addison Oram (14 points), and Catherine Newkirk (7 points).

Marathon is now scheduled to play Southern Cayuga at Marathon high school on Tuesday (February 6th) at 7:15pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer girls basketball team lost 43-15 against Mexico, falling to a 4-13 record. 

Homer was led by Eila Spanbauer (6 points), Madison Morgan (3 points), Elizabeth McCloy (2 points), Kennadie Taylor (2 points), and Lauren Franco (2 points).

Up next, Homer will play Institute of Technology at Syracuse West at Homer high school on Tuesday (February 6th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Ice Hockey: Cortland-Homer vs. Auburn

The Cortland-Homer Ice Hockey team lost 6-3 against Auburn, making them fall to an overall record of 3-16.

Cortland-Homer is scheduled to play their last game of the season against Christian Brothers Academy at the Onondaga Nation Arena on Tuesday (February 6th) at 7pm.
