Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (February 7th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Section III Class A Championships)

The Cortland Homer Trojans competed in the Section III Class B championship meet at Onondaga Community College Tuesday evening. 

According to Homer head coach George Schneider, Tasker Dennis and Gunnar Tyrrell of the boys’ team and Ingrid Aagaard, Molly McMasters, Hannah Bouwens, and Izzy Tutino of the girls’ team will compete in the section III state qualifier meet. The state qualifier meet is scheduled to take place at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena on Wednesday (February 14th) at 4pm. 

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams: 

Homer Boys

  • Gunnar Tyrrell placed 3rd in the 55 meter dash (Time - 6.87). He also came in 5th place in the long jump event (Result - 19’1.5”). His 55 meter dash time was a sophomore class record and qualified him for the Section III State Qualifier.
  • Tasker Dennis came in 3rd place in the weight throw event (Result - 49’10.5”) 
  • Homer’s 4x200 meter relay team (Logan Griffin, Gunnar Tyrrell, Anderson Lowell & Tristyn Henkel) finished in 4th place with an official time of 1:45.35.
  • Homer’s 4x400 relay team (Liam Zech, Levi Guay, Nick Costa & Tristyn Henkel) came in 5th place with an official time of 3:57.04
  • Donavin Brown placed 6th in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 9.82)
  • Homer’s 4x800 meter relay team (Levi Guay, Aidan Small, Garrett Berthelot & Damian Brown) finished in 6th place with an official time of 9:56.82. This was Homer’s best time of the season. 

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:13.12) as well as in the 1,500 run (Time - 5:11.80)
  • Molly McMasters came in 2nd place in the weight throw event (Result - 37’2.75”). She also placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 30’3.75”). McMasters now has Homer high school’s record for the distance thrown in the girls weight throw event. 
  • Hannah Bouwens placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 31’2.25”). She also came in 5th place in the weight throw event (Result - 33’11.5). Her shot put throw broke the junior class record
  • Izzy Tutino finished in 3rd place in both the 55 meter dash (Result - 7.65) and the long jump event (Result - 16’0”). Her 55 meter dash time qualifies her for the state qualifier.
  • Homer’s 4x200 meter relay team (Izzy Tutino, Ingrid Aagaard, Caitlin McCloy & Mikayla Smith) came in 4th place with a season best time of 1:55.69. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. LaFayette

The Cincinnatus boys basketball team improved to an overall record of 8-9 after beating LaFayette with a score of 72-43 Wednesday night. 

Cincinnatus was led by Canden Stafford (22 points), Jack Stafford (20 points), John Schuyler (15 points), Trevor Shevalier (10 points), Koda Temple (3 points), and Zack Streichert (2 points).

LaFayette was led by Ben Ryan (15 points), Spencer Dix (6 points), Cusin Lyons (4 points), Digby Collingbourne (4 points), Joseph Coletti (3 points), Carter Chapman (3 points), Bruce Benedict (2 points), Daniel Porter (2 points), Tyson Johnson (2 points), and Bryant Moses (2 points). 

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played against county rival McGraw tonight (February 8th) at Cincinnatus high school. Tip off is at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: McGraw vs. New York Mills

The No.10 seeded McGraw Lady Eagles ended their season after losing in three sets against No.7 seed New York Mills in the first round of the Section III Class D sectional tournament. The match was played at New York Mills high school.

With this loss, Mcgraw ended their season with an overall record of 5-10
