Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (February 14th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Stockbridge Valley (Sectional Semifinals)

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated Stockbridge Valley in the semifinal round of the Section III Class D playoff tournament. The Lady Lions won the match in three straight sets at Cincinnatus high school Wednesday night. 

Cincinnatus was led by Kaedence Latta (2 kills, 1 block, 9 digs, 19 assists & 4 aces), Allyson St.Germain (11 kills, 22 digs & 2 aces), Cassia Schuyler (16 digs, 1 assist & 2 aces), Lucy Finch (3 kills, 3 blocks, 4 digs & 1 assist), Payton Gerrard (2 kills & 8 digs), Madelyn Pittsley (3 kills, 1 block & 1 ace), and Kaylee Brenchley (1 kill & 1 dig).

Stockbridge Valley was led by Aspen Tucci (7 digs, 6 digs & 3 aces), Siena Marzan (5 kills, 7 digs & 2 aces), Jadalyn George (2 kills, 1 block, 4 digs, 9 assists & 2 aces), Paige Webb (1 kill, 5 digs, 6 assists & 3 aces), Lyla Cross (2 kills & 7 digs), Hannah Sherman (4 digs), and Barbie Myers (2 digs).

Cincinnatus is now scheduled to play in the sectional championship match against Fabius-Pompey this Saturday (February 17th) at 10am. The match will be played at Watertown High School. 

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Section III State Qualifier)

The Homer Trojans competed in the Section III State Qualifier meet at Onondaga Community College Wednesday evening. 

According to Homer head coach George Schneider, “the top two finishers in each event qualify for the NYSPHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Third place finishers can qualify for the State Championship Meet if they hit the standard for a third qualifier.”

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Tasker Dennis placed in 5th in the weight throw event (Result - 49’11”) 

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagaard came in 6th place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:08.88)
  • Molly McMasters placed 11th in the shot put event (Result - 29’7”). She also came in 16th place in the weight throw event (Result - 34’10”)
  • Hannah Bouwens came in 12th place in the shot put event (Result - 29’4.75”). She also placed 24th in the weight throw event (Result - 31’4”)
  • Izabell-Ann Tutino came in 16th place in the long jump event (Result - 15’7”)

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Section III State Qualifier)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the Section III State Qualifier meet at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena on Wednesday. 

The top two finishers in each event qualify for the New York State Championships. Third place finishers were able qualify for the State Championship Meet as well, if they hit the standard time or distance. 

Here are some highlights from the Cortland team at the state qualifier meet:

Cortland Boys

  • Michael Dearie won 1st place in the weight throw event (Result - 62’4.75”). With this performance, Dearie qualified for the state championship meet. 
  • Bryan Honan came in 2nd place in the weight throw event (Result - 61’5.25”). He also placed 5th in the shot put event (Result - 50’8”). His weight throw performance qualified him for the state championship meet.
  • Jack Phelan came in 3rd place in the triple jump event (Result - 42’7.75”)

Cortland Girls

  • Rileigh Madden finished in 13th place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’6”)
  • Ashley Merritt placed 17th in the pole vault event (Result - 7’6”)

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cortland vs. Mexico

The Cortland girls basketball team ended their regular season with an overall record of 19-1 after beating Mexico with a score of 52-31.

According to Section III, there will be a seeding meeting for the upcoming sectional tournament this Saturday (February 17th).
