The No.7 seeded Marathon Lady Olympians defeated No.10 seed Walton-Downsville in the first round of the Section IV Class C tournament. Marathon won the game with a score of 49-42 at Marathon high school.

Marathon was led by Abby Ensign (21 points), Addison Oram (14 points), Anna Hoyt (9 points), Catherine Newkirk (3 points), and Kendre Euson (2 points).

Walton-Downsville was led by Grace Walley (16 points), Ella Beardslee (13 points), Alivia Conklin (6 points), Kennedy Williams (4 points), and Kahrin Vesterfelt (3 points).

“It was a back and forth first half, each team trading baskets,” said Marathon head coach Beth Anne Duncan. #24 for W-D (Grace Walley) was a force inside. To Marathon’s credit, they held her to one field goal in the second half. We switched Addie Oram on her and she did a great job denying her the ball. This gave other players an impactful role on the help side. Abby Ensign, Kendre Euson, Cassie Forrest, and Faith Baker did a great job doubling her when she got to the block.”

“Offensively, we cooled off in the second half,” added coach Duncan.

Duncan continued by saying, “we still need to work on our passing and unforced turnovers”.

Duncan's closing remarks were, “our seniors did a great job leading us to an important win tonight, behind Abby Ensign’s 21 points.”

Marathon is now scheduled to play in the quarterfinal round of the sectional tournament against No.2 seed Greene at Greene high school on Friday (February 23rd) at 6pm.
