Cortland’s Avery Canzano and Wyatt Tinker both competed in the New York State Division II Wrestling Tournament weekend. The tournament took place at the MVP Arena in Albany, New York on Friday and Saturday.
Canzano entered the tournament as the No.8 seed in the 190-pound weight class, while Tinker entered as the No.18 seed of the 160-pound weight class.
Both local wrestlers were not able to place on the podium. However, Canzano qualified to wrestle on the second day of the tournament.
On the first day(Friday) of the tournament, Canzano received a first round bye and won by major decision (9-1) against Jayden Malecki of Chautauqua Lake in the second round. Canzano then lost against Tavio Hoose of Southwestern in the quarterfinal round by decision (4-2), sending him to compete in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
Tinker went 2-2 on Friday. He was able to win in the first round against Lorenzo Lamattina of Petrides by pin (3:07). Tinker then lost to Mason Rowley of Little Falls by major decision (11-3) in the second round.
After losing in the second round, Tinker had to gain his way back up in the consolation bracket, where he beat Robert Burns of Locust Valley in the second round of consolation by sudden victory (3-1).
In his final match of the day, Tinker lost to Michael Maliftano of Pearl River by decision (3-0), ending his state tournament run.
On the second day (Saturday) of the tournament, Canzano still had a chance to place as high as 3rd overall, but he lost in the fourth round of the consolation bracket against Maddox McCormick of Port Jervis by decision (5-2).
Canzazo finished his individual season with a 39-3 record, as well as a 2nd place finish in the Section III Class B tournament.
Tinker ended his individual season with a record of 27-10 along with a third place finish in the Section III Class B tournament.
