Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (March 28th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. DeRuyter

The McGraw baseball team played their first regular season game at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex against DeRuyter Thursday evening. McGraw won the game with a score of 17-5.

McGraw was led by Brennan Wilson (3 runs, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Owen Mulchay (2 runs, 3 hits & 4 RBI’s), ​​Riley VanLiew (2 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Thomas Lea (1 run, 1 hit & 5 RBI’s), Blair Mulcahy (4 runs), Jaydon Bassett (3 runs), Calob Sutton (1 run & 1 hit), Emory Sears (1 hit & 1 RBI).

McGraw pitchers Blair Mulcahy and Calob Sutton combined to record a total of 15 strikeouts in the game. Mulcahy threw 11 strikeouts, while Sutton recorded 4 strikeouts.

The now 1-0 Eagles are scheduled to host Cato-Meridian at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex in Cortlandville this upcoming Monday (April 1st) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus baseball team lost their first regular season game against Madison with a score of 5-2. 

Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus was led by Lukas Schieferstein (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Caleb Loomis (1 run & 1 hit), Cole Warren (2 hits). 

Madison was led by Shawn Murray (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Hunter Day (1 run & 1 hit), Darin Buchanan (1 run), Michael McBride (1 run), Jordan Dibrango (1 hit), and Kyle Peavy (1 hit). 

Up next, Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus will play on the road against DeRuyter on Friday (April 5th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Fabius-Pompey

The McGraw Lady Eagles fell against Fabius-Pompey with a score of 15-13 on the road. With this loss, McGraw started their season with an 0-1 record. 

McGraw was led by Remington Stull (5 runs), Josslyn Eaton (2 runs, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Haylee Bassett (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Leah Terwilliger (3 runs & 1 hit), Hannah Wilson (2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Katelynn Millard (1 run & 2 RBI’s), Madison Sweeney (1 run), Bristol Eastman (1 RBI), and Abby Lakie (2 strikeouts thrown). 

Fabius-Pompey was led by Ella Cornell (2 runs, 3 hits & 4 RBI’s), Michaela Mousaw (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Izzy Danielle (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Carlena Wallace (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Parker Marshal (1 run, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Chloe Becken (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Mariana Newton (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Aylana Sandberg (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Aurora McDermott (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), McKenzie Becken (2 hits), Isabella Esposito (1 run & 1 hit), Liahanna Vazquez (1 run), and Paige Stroh (9 strikeouts thrown).

Cincinnatus lost their first regular season game of the season against Stockbridge Valley on the road with a score of 4-3. 

Cincinnatus was led by Payton Gerrard (1 run & 1 hit), Madison Stover (2 RBI’s), Neveah Billings (1 run), Emma Finch (1 run), Hannah Ellerson (1 RBI’s), and Kayle Brenchley (9 strikeouts thrown). 

Stockbridge Valley was led by Elizabeth Shaver (1 run & 2 RBI’s), Kendra Genge (1 run & 1 hit), Rebekah Cullen (1 hit & 1 RBI), Marlie Brummer (1 run), Kiley Snow (1 hit), Aspen Tucci (1 RBI), and Karalynne Carmon (16 strikeouts thrown). 

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played against McGraw at Blodgett Mills on Friday (April 5th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Whitney Point

The Homer Trojans improved to a 2-0 record after beating Whitney Point with a score of 14-3 on the road. 

Homer was led by Daniel Stiles (4 goals & 2 assists), Wyatt Wilbur (3 goals & 1 assist), Gabriel O'Connor (2 goals & 2 assists), Christopher Slade (2 goals & 1 assist), Jack Brady (1 goal), Cooper Swartz (1 goal), Liam O'Connor (1 goal), Mason Potter (1 assist), and Benjamin Bradshaw (7 saves).

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost against Binghamton with a score of 6-2 Thursday evening. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 0-2. 

Cortland was led by Bodey McGrath (1 goal), Mark Darling (1 goal), Joseph Banewicz (1 assist), and Declan Vail (8 saves).

The Homer Lady Trojans won 13-8 against Clinton at Homer high school Thursday evening, improving their overall record to 2-0.  

Homer was led by Maria Partis (7 goals & 1 assists), Ella Spanbauer (2 goals & 1 assist), Lilly Sorenson (2 goals & 1 assist), Brayden Partigianoni (2 goals), Emma Effinger (1 assist), Isabelle Small (1 assist), and Aislynn Cobb (4 saves). 

Clinton was led by Leah Altieri (4 goals), Dakota Deveans (1 goal & 2 assists), Eliza O'Donnell (1 goal), Claire Mihm (1 goal), and Zeno Mummer (7 saves). 

Homer is scheduled to play on the road on Monday (April 1st) against LaFayette at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams

The Marathon Lady Olympians played against Horseheads, Elmira, and Watkins Glen at the Willowcreek Golf Course on Thursday. 

Marathon came in second place after scoring 209 points. Horseheads won first place 1ith 194 points, Elmira got 3rd place with 299 points, and Watkins Glen did not place as they didn’t have a full roster. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).
