Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 1st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Solvay

The Cortland Purple Tigers shutout Solvay with a score of 10-0 in their first game of the regular season Monday evening. 

Cortland was led by Ethan Johnson (1 run, 1 hit, 3 RBI’s & 7 strikeouts thrown), Robbie Atkins (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Cal Albright (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Caden Albright (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Danny Jackson (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Antonio Terrazas (1 run & 2 hits), Carter Urtz (1 run & 1 hit), Zach Muir (2 hits), and Owen Johnson (1 hit).

Solvay was led by Landon Raymond (1 hit), Jonah Draper (1 hit), and Maxwell Overend (3 strikeouts thrown). 

The now 1-0 Purple Tigers are scheduled to play the Homer Trojans at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Tuesday (April 9th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Cato-Meridian

The McGraw Eagles improved their overall record to 2-0 after beating Cato-Meridian 12-8 at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex Monday afternoon.

McGraw was led by Blair Mulcahy (2 runs, 2 hits, 4 RBI’s & 2 strikeouts thrown), Jaydon Bassett (2 runs, 3 hits, 2 RBI’s & 4 strikeouts thrown), Riley VanLiew (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Brennan Wilson (2 runs & 2 hits), Calob Sutton (3 runs, 1 hit & 2 strikeouts thrown), Foster Eaton (2 runs). 

Note: official stats for Cato-Meridian were not made available by the time this article was written. 

According to the McGraw athletics calendar, the Eagles will play Afton at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Saturday (April 6th) at 4pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Olympians won their first regular season game with a score of 9-8 against Groton. 

“I’m so proud of the boys today,” said Marathon head coach Bryan Hoyt. “They showed great grit. We got down then came back and tied it up. Then in the 7th inning, we made plays in the field and at the plate. I thought all three pitchers did well tonight and we were solid offensively. Blake came up huge in a clutch situation.”

According to coach Hoyt, Blake Birdsall recorded a “game winning RBI triple.”

Marathon was led by Camdyn Kashuba (1 run & 1 hit), Zachary Birdsall (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Blake Birdsall (1 Home run, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Tucker Trabucco (1 run & 1 hit), Barrett Trabucco (2 runs), Daniel Merihew (1 run), Austin Poth (1 hit), Aydan Brown (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Nash Coleman (1 run). 

In total Groton recorded 8 runs, 12 hits, and 7 RBI’s as a team. (Note: A roster of first names and last names was not fully available on Groton’s athletic website or schedule galaxy by the time this article was written). 

Up next, Marathon will play Tioga Senior on the road this Wednesday (April 3rd) at 5pm. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Lady Olympins played their first regular season game against Groton Monday afternoon. Marathon won the game with a score of 17-12. 

According to Marathon head coach Jamie Bush, short stop Kayla Wood recorded 2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI in her first Varsity game. 

Starting pitcher Izzy Conklin pitched a complete game, recording a total of 9 strikeouts. She also recorded 2 runs, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s. Cassie Forrest recorded 2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI. 

Marathon’s next game will be played against Trumansburg Central on the road this upcoming Friday (April 5th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. LaFayette

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to a 2-1 record after losing to LaFayette with a score of 11-9 on the road. 

Homer was led by Ella Spanbauer (3 goals & 3 assists), Emma Effinger (2 goals & 1 assist), Lilly Sorenson (2 goals), Isabelle Small (1 goal & 1 assist), Maria Partis (1 goal), and Aislynn Cobb (3 saves). 

LaFayette was led by Aliyah Mattox (4 goals & 3 assists), Madelyn Lund (3 goals), Kameryn Meaney (2 goals), Mackenzie Loughlin (2 goals), Gabby Flatt (1 assist).

Up next, Homer will host Jordan-Elbridge at Homer high school this Thursday (April 4th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Dryden

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost to Dryden with a score of 13-3, making them fall to an overall record of 0-3. 

Cortland was led by Mark Darling (2 goals), Devlin Riotto (1 goal), Joseph Banewicz (1 assist), and Declan Vail  (12 saves). 

Dryden was led by Brendan Williams (4 goals & 3 assists), Luke Eshelman (4 goals & 2 assists), Brayden Wood (1 goal & 3 assists), Finnegan O'Brien (2 goals), Kai Riggs (1 goal), Graydon Haines (1 goal), and Hunter Covington (12 saves). 

Cortland is scheduled to play Corcoran Syracuse on the road this upcoming Thursday (April 4th) at 7pm.
