Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 10th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Homer

The Cortland Purple Tigers hosted county rival Homer Wednesday afternoon at the Gutchess Lumber Sports complex for their second game against each other this season. Cortland won the game with a score of 26-16. 

With this result, Cortland improved to an overall record of 2-0, while Homer fell to 0-2. 

Cortland was led by Brenna Hogan (6 runs, 1 hit, 3 RBI’s & 14 strikeouts thrown), Madalyn Thompson (5 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Lauren Mott (3 runs, 1 hit & 4 RBI’s), Sophie Mayer (3 runs, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Claire Turner (2 runs, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Madison Thompson (1 run, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Abigail Romans (3 runs), Danica Peck (2 runs), Jadyn Willey (1 run), and Gracie-Jo Homza (1 RBI).

Homer was led by Samantha Sovocool (5 total runs, 1 home-run, 4 hits & 4 RBI’s), Allyson Verfuss (3 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Alexis Arnold (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Alexandria Kellaway (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Payton Coon (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Khloie Young (1 run & 1 hit),  Kaylee Darling (2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Emily Petrella (2 runs & 2 strikeouts thrown).

Cortland is now scheduled to play on Monday (April 22nd) against Skaneateles at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex at 1pm. 

According to Homer’s athletic website, the Lady Trojans will play at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex against Skaneateles on Monday (April 15th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Trojans competed in their first dual meet of the season against Westhill at Westhill high school Wednesday evening. 

The Homer boys’ team lost with a team score of 49-90; while the Homer girls’ team lost with a team score of 32-109. 

Here are some highlights from Homer’s boys and girls teams:

Homer Boys

  • Oliver Kida won 1st place in the 110 meter high hurdles (Time - 18.1) and the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”). He also placed 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 70.0). His high hurdle time qualifies him for Sectionals.
  • Tasker Dennis won 1st place in the discus throw event (Result - 141’10”) and the shot put event (Result - 35’2.75”). His discus throw qualifies him for Sectionals.
  • Tristyn Henkel won the 400 meter run (Time - 58.6). His time was a personal best.
  • Kyler Crump won 1st place in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 68.1).
  • Liam O’Brien won 1st place in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 12:11.2).
  • Logan Griffin came in 2nd place in the shot put event (Result - 33’9”).
  • Ethan Maslin placed 2nd in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 13:09.6).
  • Nick Costa placed 3rd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 12.3) and the 200 meter run (Time - 25.0).
  • Donavin Brown came in 3rd place in the 110 meter high hurdles (Time - 19.1).
  • Aidan Small placed 3rd in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:47.3).
  • Anderson Lowell placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 33’2”).
  • Riley Ferris qualified for Sectionals in the discus throw event (Result - 102’11”).

Homer Girls

  • Alyssa Swayze won 1st place in the 3,000 meter run (Time - 13:16.3).
  • Molly McMasters placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 28’11”) and the discus throw event (Result - 85’5”). Both performances qualify her for Sectionals.
  • Shelley Yang came in 2nd place in the triple jump event (Result - 28’2”) and the 200 meter run (Time - 31.4).
  • Sophie Kennett placed 2nd in the long jump event (Result - 14’4”).
  • Mia Knight placed 2bd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:28.4).
  • Hannah Bouwens placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 28’10.5”) and the discus throw event (Result - 84’4”). Both performances qualify her for Sectionals.
  • Amelia Wagner came in 3rd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:51.6) and the 3,000 meter run (Time - 13:16.3).
  • Sunny Park placed 3rd in the triple jump event (Result - 26’7.5”).
  • Madison Head placed 3rd in the high jump event (Result - 4’2”).
  • Natalie Funk came in 3rd place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 15.1).
  • Maggie Mahunik placed 3rd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:34.3).
  • Lauren Franco placed 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 81.7).
  • Brynn Loomis qualified for Sectionals in the discus throw event (Result - 81’6”).

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Vestal & Watkins Glen

The Marathon Lady Olympians played against Vestal and Watkins Glen at the Maple Hill Golf Course Wednesday afternoon. 

Vestal came in 1st place with a team score of 194, Marathon came in 2nd with a score of 210, and Watkins Glen came in 3rd, as they were not given a team score for not having a full team competing. (Note: lowest score in golf wins).

Marathon Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Olympians hosted Groton in a dual match at the Maple Hill Golf Course on Wednesday. 

Marathon lost the match with a team score of 183-158. (Note: lowest score in golf wins).
