Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 15th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Homer

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated county rival Cortland (Lady Tigers) with a score of 16-7 at Cortland junior-senior high school Monday night. 

Homer was led by Ella Spanbauer (4 goals, 2 assists & 1 ground ball), Emma Effinger (4 goals), Gracie Newman (3 goals & 1 ground ball), Maria Partis (2 goals & 1 assist), Lilly Sorenson (1 goal & 1 assist), Caitlin McCloy (1 run, 1 assist & 2 saves), Peighton Meriwether (1 goal), Isabelle Small (2 ground balls), Izzy Tutino (1 ground ball), Caleigh Stone (1 ground ball), and Aislynn Cobb (3 saves). 

Cortland was led by Lily Yang (2 goals, 1 assist & 2 ground balls), Valerosa Gambitta (3 goals & 4 ground balls), Aubree Larkin (1 goal & 2 ground balls), Francesca Smith (1 goal & 1 ground ball), Emma Marks (7 ground balls), Hannah Ostrander (2 ground balls), Gabriella Brown (2 ground balls), Sophia Souzas (1 ground ball), Juliana Zarcone (1 ground ball), and Elizabeth Slavick (2 saves). 

With this result, Homer improved to a 6-1 record, while Cortland fell to 1-5. 

Up next, Homer is scheduled to play on the road against Skaneateles tonight (April 16th) at 7pm; while Cortland hosts LaFayette at Cortland junior-senior high school tonight (April 16th) at 5:30pm.

The McGraw Eagles won 1-0 against Madison on the road in order to improve to an overall record of 5-1. 

McGraw was led by Calob Sutton (3 hits & 4 strikeouts thrown), Liam Baker (1 hit & 1 run), Blair Mulcahy (1 RBI), and Owen Mulchay (4 strikeouts thrown).

Madison was led by Shawn Murray (1 hit), Hunter Day (1 hit), Kyle Peavey (1 hit), Rylan Smith (3 strikeouts thrown), and Darin Buchanan (1 strikeout thrown). 

McGraw’s next game will be played tonight (April 16th) against Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex at 7pm.

The Marathon Olympians lost against Union Springs with a score of 5-0. With this result, Marathon now holds a 1-3 record. 

“I was happy with the way we played,” stated Marathon head coach Bryan Hoyt. “Defensively, we are keeping ourselves in the game. We need to set up on the offensive side. We have got to get our bats going.”

Marathon was led by Zachary Birdsall (1 hit & 4 strikeouts thrown), Dan Merihew (1 hit), Blake Birdsall (1 hit), and Camdyn Kashuba (1 hit).

Union Springs was led by Aaron Johnson (3 runs & 3 hits), Asa Brown (1 hit, 2 RBI’s & 10 strikeouts thrown), Connor Botindordi (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Sam Perkins (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Anthony DeAnglelis (1 run & 1 hit).

Up next, Marathon will play on the road against Union Springs this Wednesday (April 16th) at 5pm.

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to an overall record of 0-3 after losing to Skaneateles Monday evening with a score of 19-2. 

Homer was led by Allyson Verfuss (1 hit & 1 RBI), Khloie Young (1 run), Alexandria Kellaway (1 run), and Samantha Sovocool (1 hit).

Homer is now scheduled to play Chittenango on the road today (April 16th) at 5pm.

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated Brookfield with a score of 3-0 Monday evening. With this win, Cincinnatus improved to a 3-1 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Mandi Waltz (1 run & 1 hit), Payton Gerrard (1 run & 1 hit), Rachael Standish (1 run & 1 hit), Madison Stover (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Neveah Billings (2 hits), Hannah Ellerson (1 hit), and Kaylee Brenchley (4 strikeouts thrown).

Brookfield was led by Kylee Cucci (1 hit & 9 strikeouts thrown), Kaysie White (2 hits), and Delaney Karn (1 hit).

Up next, Cincinnatus will host Stockbridge Valley this upcoming Friday (April 19th) at 4:30pm.

The McGraw Lady Eagles won 10-4 against Madison on the road Monday afternoon. McGraw improved to a 1-2 record after the win.

McGraw was led by Leah Terwilliger (3 runs), Haylee Bassett (1 run & 3 hits), Madison Sweeney (2 runs & 2 hits), Remington Stull (1 run, 2 hits, 2 RBI’s & 3 strikeouts thrown), Camdyn Caperton (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Josslyn Eaton (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Bristol Eastman (1 run), Lexi McCall (1 hit), Hannah Wilson (1 hit), and Abby Lakie (5 strikeouts thrown).

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost against Union Springs with a score of 17-0 and 15-6 in a double-header, making them fall to an overall record of 2-3.

“Marathon was out matched in both games due to errors at every position tonight,” stated Marathon head coach Jamie Bush. “We play them again on Wednesday in Union Springs and will see if we can show a better effort. Maple Festival weekend may have been too much, as we did not bring our A or B game tonight.”

Marathon’s next game against Union Springs is scheduled to be played at 4:30pm at Union Springs high school on Wednesday (April 17th). 

Varsity Boys Tennis: Cortland vs. Chittenango

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost with a team score of 4-1 against Chittenango Monday afternoon. This was Cortland’s first match of the season.

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. Christian Brothers Academy (CBA)

The Homer Trojans fell to a 1-1 overall record after losing to CBA with a team score of 5-0.

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Moravia, Groton, Newfield & Odessa Montour

The Marathon Olympians hosted Moravia, Groton, Newfield, and Odessa Montour at Marathon Appleby Elementary Monday afternoon. 

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall won 1st place in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:06.76). He also placed 2nd in the pole vault event (Result - 8’6”) and came in 3rd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:21.45)
  • Colton Howe came in 4th place in both the long jump event (Result - 16’1”) and the 200 meter dash (Time - 25.58). He also placed 5th in the high jump event (Result - 5’4”)
  • Mclachi Brown came in 3rd place in the discus throw event (Result - 101’11”)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco won 1st place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:48.24) as well as in the pole vault event (Result - 7’6”)
  • Catherine Newkirk won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result - 32’0”). She also came in 2nd place in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 18.0) and placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash (Time - 29.36)
  • Scout Morse finished in 3rd place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 14.20). She also came in 6th place in the 200 meter dash (Time - 30.05)
  • Nevaeh Abbott placed 5th in the 100 meter dash (Time - 14.74)
  • Aliyah Roberts came in 6th place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 14.97) 
  • Shaelin Phillips placed 3rd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:10.23)
  • Hanna Prestigiacomo placed 6th in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:55.85)
  • Kennedy Eaton finished in 4th place in both the 400 meter run (Time - 1:18.98) and the long jump event (Result - 13’0”)
  • Addison Oram came in 2nd place in the high jump event (Result - 4’8”). She also placed 5th in the 200 meter dash (Time - 29.79)
  • Megan Howard came in 4th place in the shot put event (Result - 21’1.50”) as well as in the discus throw event (Result - 64’7”)

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Olympians played against Groton at the Stonehedge Golf Course Wednesday afternoon. 

Marathon lost the match with a team score of 200-175 (Note: Lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Lansing & Elmira Notre Dame

The Marathon Lady Olympians hosted Lansing and Elmira Notre Dame at the Maple Hill Golf Course on Monday. 

Marathon placed 2nd overall as a team after scoring a total of 203 points. Lansing placed 1st with 195 points, and Elmira Notre Dame placed 3rd with 244 points. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).
