Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 17th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Jordan-Elbridge

The Homer Trojans competed in a dual meet against Jordan Elbridge at Homer high school Wednesday evening. 

According to Homer head coach George Schneider, the Homer boys’ team won with a team score of 68-63; while the Homer girls’ team won with a team score of 109-25. 

Here are some of Wednesday’s highlights from the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Oliver Kida won 1st place in the long jump event (Result - 16’8”), the pole vault event (Result - 8’6”), and the 110 meter high hurdles (Time - 17.7). He also placed 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 68.3 seconds). All of his performances were season bests.
  • Tasker Dennis won 1st place in the discus throw event (Result - 127’11”). He also placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 40’1.75”). His shot put performance qualifies him for the Sectional Championships. 
  • Damian Brown won 1st place in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:22.7) and placed 2nd in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 11:40.4).
  • Kyler Crump won 1st place in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 66.7).
  • Tristyn Henkel won 1st place in the 400 meter run (Time - 59.0).
  • Anderson Lowell won 1st place in the 200 meter run (Time - 25.3).
  • Logan Griffin came in 2nd place in the discus throw event (Result - 99’2”). He also placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 38’8.5”). Both of his performances were season bests, and his shot put performance also qualifies him for the Sectional Championships.
  • Aidan Small finished in 2nd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:36.3). He also came in 3rd place in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:36.0). His 1,600 meter time was a season best.
  • Gabe Mendiola placed 2nd in the high jump event (Result - 4’10”). His jump was a personal best.
  • Nick Costa finished in 2nd place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 12.2). His run was a season best. 
  • Donavin Brown came in 2nd place in the 110 meter high hurdles (Time - 19.2).
  • Liam O’Brien placed 3rd in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 12:13.6).
  • Riley Ferris placed 3rd in the discus throw event (Result - 95’11”).

Homer Girls

  • Sophie Kennett won 1st place in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 18.1), the long jump event (Result - 12’11.75”) and the pole vault event (Result - 6’6”). Her 100 meter hurdles and pole vault performances were personal bests. Her 100 meter hurdle time qualifies her for the Sectional Championships.
  • Shelley Yang won 1st place in the 400 meter dash (Time - 72.6) and the triple jump event (Result - 27’7”). She also placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 14.5).
  • Lauren Franco won 1st place in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 80.6). She also tied for 1st place in the high jump event (Result - 4’0”). Her 400 meter hurdle time was a personal best.
  • Molly McMasters won 1st place in the discus throw event (Result - 91’6”). She also placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 30’8.5”). 
  • Hannah Bouwens won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 31’4”). She also placed 3rd in the discus throw event (Result - 68’2”). 
  • Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:31.6). Her performance qualifies her for the Sectional Championships.
  • Taylor Chisholm won 1st place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 14.5). Her performance was a season best.
  • Natalie Funk won 1st place in the 200 meter dash (Time - 31.7). She also placed 3rd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 14.9).
  • Madison Head tied for 1st place in the high jump event (Result - 4’0”).
  • Natalie Funk, Taylor Chisholm, Molly McMasters, and Lauren Franco won the 4x100 meter relay (Time - 59.2).
  • Mia Knight, Evie Schneider, Maggie Mahunik, and Alyssa Swayze won the 4x800 meter relay with an official time of 12:12.6.
  • Lauren Franco, Sophie Kennett, Mia Knight, and Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in the 4x400 meter relay with an official time of 4:41.9.
  • Amelia Wagner placed 2nd in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 19.7) and in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:09.2). She also placed 3rd in the 3,000 meter run (Time - 14:22.6). Her 100 meter hurdle time was a personal best.
  • Angela Yang came in 2nd place in the 400 meter run (Time - 82.5). She also placed 3rd in the 800 meter run (Time - 3:26.6).
  • Evie Schneider placed 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 89.3). She also placed 3rd in the 200 meter run (Time - 33.8). Her 400 meter hurdles time was a personal best. 
  • Alyssa Swayze placed 2nd in the 3,000 meter run (Time - 12:54.0).
  • Brynn Loomis placed 2nd in the discus throw event (Result - 84’5”). 
  • Olivia Congdon placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 24’6.25”). Her performance was a season best.
  • Mia Knight placed 3rd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:10.3). Her run was a personal best.

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Chittenango

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in a dual meet against Chittenango on Wednesday.

The Cortland boys’ team lost with a team score of 53-87; while the Cortland girls’ team lost with a team score of 51-88. 

Here are some of Wednesday’s highlights from the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Iniko Abani won 1st place in the 110 meter high hurdles (Time - 16.9) and the high jump event (Result - 5’10”). He also placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 11.9) and the 200 meter run (Time - 24.1)
  • Liam Burns finished in 2nd place in the high jump event (Result - 5’2”). He also came in 3rd place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 11.9) and the 200 meter run (Time - 24.6)
  • Liam Grant came in 2nd place in the triple jump event (Result - 33’3”). He also finished in 3rd place in the 400 meter run (Time - 59.5)
  • Reed Smith won 1st place in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 66.5)
  • Jacob Mones came in 3rd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:21.9)
  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 44’8”) and the discus event (Result - 139’6.5”)
  • Michael Dearie placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 40’11”) and the discus event (Result - 126’2.5”)
  • Eugene Aharkob won 1st place in the long jump event (Result 16’7”)
  • Mick Maloney placed 3rd in the triple jump event (Result - 30’7”)

Cortland Girls

  • Campbell Bush won 1st place in the 100 meter high hurdles event (Result - 16.9). She also placed 3rd in the long jump event (Result - 12’10.5”)
  • Bailey Dintino won 1st place in the 200 meter run (Time - 28.4). She also finished in 2nd place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.6)
  • Isabella Sisting came in 2nd place in the 200 meter run (Time - 28.8) and in the pole vault event (Result - 6’0”). She also placed 3rd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.9)
  • Kendall Mullally placed 2nd in the 400 meter run (Time - 69.0)
  • Kartyr Hubbard came in 2nd place in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 86.1)
  • Darah Peck placed 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 96.7)
  • Brianna Bergene came in 3rd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:45.1)
  • Alivia Reif won the shot put event (Result - 24’7”)
  • Ashley Merritt won 1st place in the pole vault event (Result - 7’6”). She also came in 2nd place in the high jump event (Result - 4’4”)
  • Maude Terwilliger placed 2nd in the triple jump event (Result - 26’4”)
  • Serene Gray placed 3rd in the triple jump event (Result - 26’2”)

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Moravia & Odessa-Montour

The Marathon Olympians competed against Moravia and Odessa-Montour at the Maple Hill Golf Course on Wednesday. 

Marathon won 1st place with a team score of 203. Moravia placed 2nd with a score of 245 and Odessa-Montour placed 3rd with a score of 260. (Note: lowest score in golf wins).
