Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 19th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Tioga Twisted Relays)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the Tioga Twisted Relays at Tioga high school Friday afternoon. 

The Marathon boys’ team placed 7th overall in the meet, while the Marathon girls’ team placed 3rd overall. 

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Colton Howe won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result - 40’5.50”)
  • Andrew Edsall finished in 3rd place in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 4:59.15), in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:15.77), and in the pole vault event (Result - 9’0”) 

Marathon Girls

  • Addison Oram won 1st place in the high jump event (Result - 4’8”)
  • Catherine Newkirk won 1st place in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 18.25) and in the triple jump event (Result - 31’2”)
  • Abigail Trabucco won 1st place in the pole vault event (Result - 7’6”). She also came in 2nd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:45.68)
  • Shaelin Phillips placed 4th in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:13.07)
  • Larina Cochran came in 6th place in the 400 meter run (Time - 1:22.85)
  • Kennedy Eaton finished in 6th place in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 1:34.29)
  • Scout Morse placed 2nd in the 200 meter dash (Time - 31.11). She also placed 3rd in the long jump event (Result - 13’2.25”)
  • Sophia Hansen placed 5th in the triple jump event (Result - 27’4”)
  • Megan Howard came in 4th place in the shot put event (Result - 23’0.25”). She also placed 5th in the discus throw event (Result - 66’11”)

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Onondaga Central Track Invitational)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the Onondaga Central Track Invitational Friday evening. 

The Cortland boys’ team placed 7th overall out of 17 placing teams, while the Cortland girls’ team placed 5th overall out of 16 placing teams. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Iniko Abani finished in 2nd place in the 110 meter hurdles (Time - 16.74). He also placed 5th in the high jump event (Result - 5’8”)
  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 45’2”) as well as in the discus throw event (Result - 134’2”). 

Cortland Girls

  • Campbell Bush came in 4th place in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 17.36)
  • Bailey Dintino finished in 3rd place in the 200 meter dash (Time - 28.47) and in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.75)
  • Isabella Sisting placed 4th in the 200 meter dash (Time - 28.60)
  • Ashley Merritt came in 3rd place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”)

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Homer

The Homer girls lacrosse team defeated county rival Cortland in a tight game that went all the way to overtime. Homer won with a score of 7-6. 

With this win, Homer improved to an overall record of 7-2, while Cortland fell to 1-7. 

Homer was led by Gracie Newman (3 goals), Ella Spanbauer (2 goals & 2 assists), Lilly Sorenson (2 goals & 2 ground balls), Caitlin McCloy (1 goal & 3 ground balls), Isabelle Small (1 goal & 1 ground ball), Maria Partis (1 goal), Izzy Tutino (3 ground balls), Mikayla Smith (2 ground balls), and Aislynn Cobb (9 saves). 

Cortland was led by Valerosa Gambitta (3 goals), Aubree Larkin (1 goal & 2 assists), Sophia Souzas (1 goal), Lily Yang (1 goal), and Elizabeth Slavick (7 saves). 

Up next, Homer will host Westhill at Homer high school on Monday (April 22nd) at 12:30pm.

On the other hand, Cortland will look to turn things around as they play Cazenovia at Cortland junior-senior high school on Tuesday (April 30th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Westhill

The Cortland Purple Tigers fell to an overall record of 5-2 after losing to Westhill with a score of 8-1. 

Cortland was led by Cal Albright (1 run & 1 hit), Caden Albright (1 hit & 1 RBI), Ethan Johnson (4 strikeouts thrown), and Sean Rogoff (1 strikeout thrown). 

Westhill was led by Ryan Campbell (1 run, 2 hits, 2 RBI’s & 14 strikeouts thrown), Kellen Pens (2 runs & 1 hit), Michael Madigan III (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Trey Dillabough (2 hits & 1 RBI), Luke Pickett (1 hit & 1 RBI), Taden Chester (1 run & 1 hit), Dominic Zawadzki (1 run & 1 hit), Peter Stroman (2 hits), and Anthony Sampo (1 run).

Cortland was scheduled to play their next game at the Partigianoni Tournament taking place at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex this morning (April 20th). They are scheduled to play their second game of the tournament at 4pm today (April 20th). 

Varsity Baseball: Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus vs. Madison 

The Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus baseball team lost to Madison with a score of 8-2 Friday evening, making them fall to an overall record of 0-3.

Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus is now scheduled to play Town of Webb on the road on Friday (April 26th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Stockbridge Valley

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions beat Stockbridge Valley with a score of 6-5 at Cincinnatus high school Friday evening. 

Cincinnatus was led by Payton Gerrard (1 run, 2 hits & 4 strikeouts thrown), Madison Stover (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Lucy Finch (1 run), Kayle Brenchley (1 hit, 1 RBI & 4 strikeouts thrown), Hannah Ellerson (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Rachael Standish (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), and Addison Stith (1 hit & 1 RBI).

Cincinnatus was scheduled to play Marathon at the Marathon tournament today at 9:30am. The Cortland Voice will have a recap on that game this upcoming Monday (April 22nd).
