Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 23rd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Westhill Invitational)

The Homer Trojans competed in the Westhill Invitational at Westhill high school on Tuesday. 

According to Homer head coach George Schneider, “approximately 700 athletes from over 20 schools competed in the meet.”

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer boys

  • Oliver Kida won 1st place in the 200 meter hurdles (Time - 27.88 seconds). He also tied for 4th place in the pole vault event (Result - 9’0”). His pole vault performance was a personal best
  • Donavin Brown, Kyler Crump, and Oliver Kida placed 2nd in the 3x110 meter shuttle hurdles with an official time of 55.93.
  • Damian Brown placed 4th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (Time - 11:30.34). His time was a personal best and qualified him for the Sectional Championships.
  • Tristyn Henkel ran personal best times in the 100 meter dash (Time - 12.99) and the 200 meter dash (Time - 26.87).
  • Landon Brown ran personal best times in the 100 meter dash (Time - 14.27) and the 200 meter dash (Time - 30.14).
  • Lincoln Marshall turned in a personal best time of 26.76 in the 200 meter dash.
  • Donavin Brown had a personal best long jump of 16’0”.

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:27.56). She also placed 4th in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 5:07.36). Both of her performances were season bests. 
  • Brynn Loomis placed 3rd in the discus throw event with a personal best throw of 87’8”. She also had a personal best throw of 21’9” in the shot put event. 
  • Sophie Kennett came in 4th in the 200 meter hurdles (Time - 32.18). Her performance was a school record. 
  • Lauren Franco ran a time of 9:10.13 in the 2,000 meter steeplechase, which qualifies her for the Sectional Championships.
  • Shelley Yang ran a personal best time in the 200 meter dash (Time - 31.11) 
  • Sunny Park ran a personal best time of 32.96 seconds in the 200 meter dash. She also had a personal best triple jump of 28’6”.
  • Angela Yang ran a personal best time of 3:08.61 in the 800 meter run.
  • Mia Knight ran a personal best 1,500 meter run time of 6:05.94.
  • Ellie Ensign had a personal best throw in the discus event (Result - 67’3”). She also had a personal best throw of 24’11” in the shot put event. 
  • Hannah Wyatt had a personal best discus throw of 48’11” and a personal best throw of 17’8” in the shot put event 

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Moravia

The Marathon Olympians lost to Moravia with a score of 14-1 Tuesday afternoon. With this loss, Marathon has fallen to an overall record of 2-4. 

“Credit to Moravia, they can really hit the ball,” stated Marathon head coach Bryan Hoyt. “They are well coached and played a great game. I was happy with our offense tonight. We hit the ball hard. Unfortunately, we hit right at the defense today. We just need to keep working and putting the practice in.”

Marathon was led by Zachary Birdsall (1 run & 1 hit), Blake Birdsall (2 hits), Barrett Trabucco (1 hit & 1 RBI), Daniel Merihew (1 hit & 1 strikeout thrown), and Aydan Brown (1 hit). 

Moravia was led by Eli Landis (4 runs, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Dillon Palmer (3 runs, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 3 strikeouts thrown), Jairen Francis (2 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Thomas Palmer (2 runs & 2 hits), Robert Balk (2 runs & 1 hit), Luke Landis (1 hit & 3 RBI), Noah Corbett (1 run), and Carson Andrews (1 hit).

Marathon’s next game will be played on the road today (April 24th) against Newfield at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Phoenix

The Homer Lady Trojans have fallen to an overall record of 0-6 after losing to Phoenix with a score of 19-13 on Tuesday. 

Homer was led by Allyson Verfuss (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Alexandria Kellaway (2 total runs, 1 homerun, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Khloie Young (3 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Kaylee Darling (3 hits & 2 RBI’s), McKenzie Head (2 runs & 1 hit), Brooke Casterline (1 run & 1 hit), Emily Petrella (1 run & 5 strikeouts thrown), Payton Coon (1 run), MyaLynne Riccardi (1 run & 1 strikeout thrown), and Samantha Sovocool (1 hit). 

Phoenix was led by Lily Amidon (3 runs, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 12 strikeouts thrown), Maura Catanzano (3 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Maddie DiGiovanni (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Bailey Hager (3 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Shaylee Denslow (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Hannah Morrison (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Lacey Goodman (2 runs & 1 hit), Hannah Brooker (1 run & 1 RBI), America Figueras (1 run & 1 hit), Ashley Finch (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Rose Mullin (1 run).

Up next, Homer will host Solvay at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex today (April 24th) at 1pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Westhill

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost to Westhill at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex with a score of 7-2. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to a 2-2 record. 

Cortland was led by Brenna Hogan (1 run, 1 hit & 8 strikeouts thrown), Sophie Mayer (1 hit), Ava Turner (1 hit), Abigail Romans (1 run), and Lauren Mott (1 RBI).

Westhill was led by Samantha Snyder (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI & 9 strikeouts thrown), Alexa Korrie (1 run, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Cadence Ramsing (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Jocelyn Caputo (1 homerun, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Sydney Medeiros (1 run & 1 hit), and Morgan Kohanski (1 run).

Cortland is now scheduled to play in the “PBR Diamond Series” at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Thursday (April 25th). Cortland’s first game will be played against Central Square at 2:15pm. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Moravia

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost to Moravia with a score of 22-9, making them fall to an overall record of 3-6.

Marathon’s next game will be played against Newfield at Newfield high school today (April 24th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Penn Yan

The Homer Trojans lost a close game against Penn Yan in double-overtime with a score of 8-7. With this loss, Homer now holds a 6-2 record. 

Homer was led by Daniel Stiles (1 goal, 2 assists & 1 ground ball), Alexander Votra (1 goal & 3 ground balls), Wyatt Wilbur (1 goal, 1 assist & 2 ground balls), Christopher Slade (2 goals & 2 ground balls), Gabriel O'Connor (1 goal & 3 ground balls), Logan Stauber (3 ground balls), Cooper Swartz (1 goal & 1 ground ball), Jack Brady (1 ground ball), Mason Potter (1 ground ball), and Benjamin Bradshaw (21 saves).
