Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 6th)

Marathon Softball Team.

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Trumansburg (Double-Header)

The Marathon Lady Olympians started the day by playing the remainder of the game against Trumansburg from April 27th. The game was delayed because of rain. 

Marathon won that game with a score of 18-14. 

The Lady Olympians then went on to host senior night on the second game of the night.  

Marathon won the second game with a score of 14-2. 

Marissa Allen hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to open up a tight 3-2 game,” stated Marathon head coach Jamie Bush. “Allen would score the final run in the fifth off a sacrifice fly by Sutton to end the game on runs. Seniors stepped up tonight and played their best ball of the season.”

Seniors Marissa Allen, Haylee Chrysler, and Melodie Sutton were celebrated at the game. 

Marathon’s next game will be played against Newfield on the road today (May 7th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Fabius-Pompey

The McGraw Lady Eagles improved to an overall record of 5-5 after beating Fabius-Pompey with a score of 14-8. 

McGraw was led by Remmington Stull (3 runs, 1 hit, 1 RBI & 5 strikeouts thrown), Katelynn Millard (2 hits & 4 RBI’s), Josslyn Eaton (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Leah Terwilliger (3 runs & 1 hit), Madison Sweeney (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Haylee Bassett (1 run & 1 hit), Lexi McCall (2 runs), Abby Lakie (1 run & 3 strikeouts thrown), Hannah Wilson (1 run), and Camdyn Caperton (1 run). 

Fabius-Pompey was led by Liahanna Vazquez (2 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Payton Taylor (2 runs & 3 hits), Michaela Mousaw (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Aurora McDermott (1 run & 1 hit), Mariana Newton (2 hits & 3 strikeouts thrown), Chloe Becken (1 run), Aunaka Valdez (1 run), Madeline Parker Marshall (1 hit), Ella Cornell (1 RBI), and Paige Stroh (3 strikeouts thrown). 

Up next, McGraw will play Stockbridge Valley on the road today (May 7th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Newfield

The Marathon Olympians celebrated their lone senior Zachary Birdsall on senior night Monday evening. 

However, the Olympians lost the game with a score of 10-7.

Marathon’s next game will be played on the road against Tioga Senior today (May 7th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Tioga Senior & Odessa-Montour Central

The Marathon Olympians played against Tioga Senior and Odessa-Montour Central (OMC) at the Maple Hill Golf Course in Marathon Monday evening. 

Marathon defeated OMC with a team score of 197-257 and lost to Tioga Senior with a team score of 197-177. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).

According to Marathon head coach Sydney Jennison, The Marathon team “has now qualified for team sectionals” which will be played on Monday (May 20th) at SUNY Delhi. Marathon finished the regular season with a 4-6 record.

Varsity Boys Golf: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus Lions defeated Madison with a team score of 270-318 on Monday.

Varsity Boys Tennis: Cortland vs. LaFayette 

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated LaFayette with a team score of 3-2 Monday afternoon.

  • 1st Singles: Tyler Cranfield (Cortland) defeated Thomas Somerlot (LaFayette) - (6-0) & (6-0)
  • 2nd Singles: Wrangler VanSlyke (Cortland) beat Hudson Borchert (LaFayette) - (6-4) & (6-2)
  • 3rd Singles: Jeremie Hale (Cortland) defeated Ella Harris (LaFayette) - (6-0) & (6-0)
  • 1st Doubles: Andre Myers & Sai Patel (Cortland) lost to Ian Colburn & Darren Benjamin (LaFayette) - (7-5), (5-7) & (0-6)
  • 2nd Doubles: LaFayette won by forfeit

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Skaneateles

The Cortland girls’ lacrosse team has fallen to an overall record of 2-10 after losing to Skaneateles with a score of 18-2. 

Cortland was led by Valerosa Gambitta (1 goal), Aubree Larkin (1 goal), and Elizabeth Slavick (7 saves), 

Skaneateles’ goals were scored by Grace Marquardt (4 goals), Paige Willard (3 goals), Madison Rossi (2 goals), Tatum Ryan (2 goals), Kate Falkenberg (1 goal), Ana Nichols (1 goal), Camryn Calabro (1 goal), Lily Kennedy (1 goal), Claire Holden (1 goal), Anasofia Cirincione (1 goal), and Mara Stanton (1 goal). 

Cortland is now scheduled to play against Christian Brothers Academy at Cortland junior-senior high school this upcoming Thursday (May 9th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (IAC Divisional Meet)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the “IAC Divisional Meet” at Dryden high school Monday evening. 

The Marathon boys’ team placed 7th out of 9 placing teams, while the Marathon girls’ team placed 4th out of 8 placing teams. 

Here are some highlights from the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall placed 2nd in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 4:46.48)
  • Colton Howe finished in 3rd place in the triple jump event (Result - 40’11.25”)

Marathon Girls

  • Megan Howard won 1st place in the discus throw event (Result - 68’10”)
  • Shaelin Phillips came in 5th place in the 3,000 meter run (Time - 13:21.37)
  • Abigail Trabucco came in 2nd place in the pole vault event (Result - 9’0”). She also placed 4th in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:45.97)
  • Addison Oram finished in 2nd place in the 400 meter run (Time - 1:05.74). She also tied for 4th place in the high jump event (Result - 4’8”)
  • Catherine Newkirk came in 2nd place in the triple jump event (Result - 32’10”). She also placed 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 18.06)
  • Scout Morse tied for 6th place in the long jump event (Result - 14’6”)
  • Sophia Hansen placed 4th in the triple jump event (Result - 29’10”)
  • Kennedy Eaton placed 5th in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 1:21.69)
