Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 9th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Lady Trojans improved to an overall record of 9-5 after beating Mexico with a score of 15-4.  

Homer was led by Maria Partis (3 goals, 3 assists & 1 ground ball), Lilly Sorenson (3 goals, 1 assist & 1 ground ball), Ella Spanbauer (2 goals & 2 assists), Isabelle Small (2 goals), Emma Effinger (2 goals), Caitlin McCloy (2 goals), Gracie Newman (1 goal), Kiera Hooper (1 assist), Taryn Quinn (2 ground balls), Caleigh Stone (1 ground ball), and Aislynn Cobb (9 saves). 

Mexico was led by Hailey Workman (2 goals), Kaylee Halsey (1 goal), Aubrey Shaffer (1 goal), and Anna Fox (6 saves). 

Homer is now scheduled to host Cazenovia at Homer high school this upcoming Tuesday (May 14th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Christian Brothers Academy (CBA)

The Cortland girls’ lacrosse team lost 18-4 against CBA on Thursday, making them fall to a 2-11 record. 

Cortland was led by Valerosa Gambitta (2 goals & 1 ground ball), Sophia Souzas (1 goal), Emma Marks (1 goal), Ella Starinsky (1 ground ball), Aubree Larkin (1 ground ball), and Elizabeth Slavick (7 saves). 

CBA was led by Maeve Mackenzie (3 goals), Sydney Vaughn (2 goals & 2 assists), Emery McCartney (3 goals & 1 assist), Madison Ceclia (2 goals & 5 assists), Lilah Kirch (3 goals & 3 assists), Charlotte Wilson (1 goal), Kayla Cecilia (1 assist), Adele Summer (1 goal), Ryann Murphy (3 goals), and Katie Pledger (3 saves). 

Up next, Cortland will play on the road against New Hartford on Saturday (May 11th) at 11am. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Tully

The Homer Trojans beat Tully with a score of 16-11 in order to improve to an 8-5 record. 

Homer was led by Daniel Stiles (4 goals & 1 assist), Cooper Swartz (4 goals), Wyatt Wilbur (2 goals & 1 assist), Christopher Slade (4 goals), Gabriel O'Connor (1 goal), Mason McCall (1 assist), Brycen Poole (1 assist), Jack Brady (1 goal), and Benjamin Bradshaw (13 saves). 

Tully was led by Jacob Verbanic (1 goal & 3 assists), Nathan Reid (3 goals), Daniel Garback (3 goals), Louis Bennett (2 goals & 1 assist), Tristan Hendricks (1 goal & 1 assist), Lane Greczzyn (1 assist), Daniel Shetler (1 goal), and Payton Bliss  (14 saves). 

Homer’s next game will be played at Homer high school against New Hartford on Saturday (May 11th) at 12pm (noon). 

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Madison

The McGraw softball team improved to an overall record of 5-6 after beating Madison with a score of 18-3. 

McGraw was led by Katelynn Millard (3 hits & 4 RBI’s), Josslyn Eaton (3 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Remmington Stull (4 run & 3 hits), Bristol Eastman (1 run & 1 hit), Lexi McCall (2 runs), Leah Terwilliger (3 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Haylee Bassett (2 runs & 1 hit), Madison Sweeney (2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Hannah Wilson (1 run & 2 hits), Camdyn Caperton (1 run & 1 hit), Casiana Vasquez (1 run), and Abby Lakie (4 strikeouts thrown).

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Brookfield

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions won 3-2 against Brookfield on Thursday in order to improve their overall record to 10-2. 

Cincinnatus was led by Payton Gerrard (1 run, 2 hits & 12 strikeouts thrown), Madison Stover (1 run & 1 hit), Lucy Finch (1 run & 1 hit), Kayle Brenchley (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Neveah Billings (1 hit), Hannah Ellerson (1 hit), Rachael Standish (1 hit), and Addison Stith (1 hit). 

Brookfield was led by MacKenzie Bugbee (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Stephenie Brean (1 run & 1 hit), Kaysie White (1 hit), Mallory Wilcox (3 hits & 1 RBI), and Kylee Cucci (4 strikeouts thrown). 

Cincinnatus is now scheduled to play Saranac at Cincinnatus high school on Saturday (May 11th) at 1:15pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Christian Brothers Academy (CBA)

The Cortland softball team lost to CBA with a score of 15-3, making them fall to a 6-7 record. 

Cortland was led by Sophie Mayer (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Natalie Burns (1 run & 2 hits), Abigail Romans (1 run), Claire Turner (1 RBI), and Brenna Hogan (6 strikeouts thrown). 

CBA was led by Allison Boule (3 runs & 4 hits), Avery Bowman (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Juliette Zimmerman (3 runs, 4 hits & 1 RBI), Maricatherine Giamartino (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Grace Bertone-Nicotra (1 run, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Aubrey Vincentini (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Lauren Zollo (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Giana Anderson (1 run), and Gracie Battles (1 run, 2 hits & 4 strikeouts thrown).

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to Mexico with a score of 11-5 on Thursday. With this loss, Homer now holds a 1-12 record. 

Homer was led by Allyson Verfuss (2 runs & 1 hit), MyaLynne Riccardi (1 hit, 1 RBI & 1 strikeout thrown), Alexis Arnold (1 run), Khloie Young (1 run & 1 hit), Alexandria Kellaway (1 run & 1 hit), Kaylee Darling (1 hit), and Emily Petrella (3 strikeouts thrown).

Mexico was led by Hailey Comstock (2 runs, 3 hits & 10 strikeouts thrown), Giuliana Jones (3 runs, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Katie Edwards (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Kacee Killam (1 run, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Anin O'Neil (1 run), Kylee Urqhart (1 run), Elizabeth LaFleur (1 hit), and Remi Rombough (1 run). 

Homer’s next game will be played today (May 10th) at Blodgett Mills against McGraw at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Christian Brothers Academy (CBA)

The Cortland Purple Tigers fell to an overall record of 11-5 after losing to CBA with a score of 7-4. 

Cortland was led by Ethan Johnson (1 run & 1 RBI & 3 RBI’s), Owen Johnson (1 run & 2 hits), Cal Albright (1 run & 1 hit), Caden Albright (1 hit), Danny Jackson (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Antonio Terrazas (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Connor Browngardt (1 RBI). 

CBA was led by Ryan Petrie (2 hits & 8 strikeouts thrown), Riley Clemons-Butenko (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Cooper Marko (1 run & 2 hits), Michael Giamartino (1 hit), Jack Landau (1 run, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Ben Snyder (1 run & 1 hit), Lawson Brown (1 run), Hector Gonzalez (1 run & 2 hits), Jimmy Kennedy (1 run), and Tom Menar (2 strikeouts thrown).

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Trojans lost against Mexico with a score of 4-2 on Thursday. With this loss, Homer has fallen to an 8-6 record. 

Homer was led by Mitchell Earle (1 run), Tyler VanEtten (1 run & 1 hit), Evan Sullivan (1 hit & 1 RBI), Jack Bertram (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Max Franco (2 strikeouts thrown). 

Mexico was led by Brayden Mack (1 run & 10 strikeouts thrown), Johnathan Greeno (1 hit), Jacob Poissant (1 run & 1 hit), Joe Shendock II (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Dylan Vecchio (1 hit), Evan Hansen (1 run & 1 RBI), and Shun Idenawa (1 hit & 2 RBI’s).

Homer is now scheduled to play Skaneateles at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex today (May 10th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Madison

The McGraw Eagles lost to Madison with a score of 6-5, making them fall to an overall record of 8-4. 

McGraw was led by Blair Mulcahy (1 run & 1 hit & 11 strikeouts thrown), Owen Mulchay (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Jaydon Bassett (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Brennan Wilson (1 run & 1 hit), Calob Sutton (1 run & 1 hit), Thomas Lea (2 hits), Foster Eaton (1 hit), and Riley VanLiew (1 RBI).

Varsity Baseball: Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus vs. Stockbridge Valley

The Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus baseball team lost 5-3 to Stockbridge Valley Thursday evening. With this loss, Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus fell to a 4-6 record. 

Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus was led by Lukas Schieferstein (2 runs & 2 hits), Oliver Marshall (2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Troy Miller (1 run & 1 hit), Avram Moses (1 hit), Hunter Rozewski (1 hit), and Braeden Davis (4 strikeouts thrown).

Otselic Valley-Cincinnatus is now scheduled to play Stockbridge Valley on the road this upcoming Tuesday (May 14th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. Phoenix

The Homer Trojans defeated Phoenix with a team score of 4-1 Thursday afternoon. 

Here are the results from each match:

• 1st Singles: Brayden Clark (Homer) defeated Sam Pritting (Phoenix) - (6-2) & (6-0)
• 2nd Singles: Drew Cotterill (Homer) defeated Liam Zalewski (Phoenix) - (6-4), (2-6) & (6-2)
• 3rd Singles: Cooper Layaw (Homer) defeated Owen Klock (Phoenix) - (6-0) & (6-0)
• 1st Doubles: Max Totman & Caleb Hanson (Homer) lost to Cayden McKay & Cooper Graham (Phoenix) - (6-2) & (6-0)
• 2nd Doubles: Lucas Barbieri & Nicolas Barbieri (Homer) defeated Harrington Grayson & Jackson Giacobbi (Phoenix) - (6-0) & (6-2)

Varsity Boys Tennis: Cortland vs. Westhill

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost to Westhill with a team score of 3-2 on Thursday.

• 1st Singles: Tyler Cranfield (Cortland) defeated Jackson Flegel (Westhill) - (6-1) & (6-0)
• 2nd Singles: Wrangler VanSlyke (Cortland) lost to Zane Eldred (Westhill) - (6-0) & (6-2)
