Cortland County High School Sports Recaps; Sectional Championships (May 24th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Section III Class A Championships)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the “Section III Class A Championships” this week at East Syracuse Minoa high school. 

The meet started taking place on Wednesday (May 22nd), but was postponed due to weather conditions, according to Cortland coach Luke Schweider.

The rest of the meet was held on Friday (May 24th). 

Before the meet was postponed on Wednesday, Cortland senior Bryan Honan broke a Cortland school record on the discus throw event. Click here for more information on Honan’s record breaking throw.

The Cortland boys’ team placed 9th out of 15 placing teams, while the Cortland girls’ team placed 13th out of 15 placing teams. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Bryan Honan broke a Cortland school record to win 1st place in the discus throw (Result - 151’3”). He also came in 6th place in the shot put event (result - 42’0.25”)
  • Iniko Abani placed 3rd in the 110 meter high hurdles (Time - 16.17) and in the high jump (Result - 5’10”)
  • Michael Dearie came in 4th place in the discus throw (Result - 138’1”)
  • Cortland’s 4x400 meter relay team (Feodor Kalytyuk, Eugene Aharkov, Spenser Dodds & Jack Phelan) finished in 4th place with an official time of 3:36.97. 
  • Jack Phelan placed 5th in the triple jump (Result - 42’10.25”)

Cortland Girls

  • Rileigh Madden came in 6th place in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”)
  • Cortland’s 4x100 meter relay team (Morgann Doane, Isabella Sisting, Rileigh Madden & Bailey Dintino) finished in 6th place with an official time of 53 seconds

Varsity Track & Field: Cincinnatus vs. Multiple Teams (Section III Class D Championships)

The Cincinnatus Lions competed in the Section III Class D Championship meet at Oriskany high school on Friday (May 24th). 

The Cincinnatus boys’ team placed 12th out of 13 placing teams, while the Cincinnatus girls’ team placed 8th out of 13 placing teams. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cincinnatus boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cincinnatus Boys

  • Trevor Shevalier came in 5th place in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 1:09.29). He also placed 6th in the high jump event (Result - 5’4”)
  • Eric Peterson placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 37’9”). He also came in 6th place in the discus throw (Result - 86’11)

Cincinnatus Girls

  • Madelyn Pittsley finished in 2nd place in the long jump event (Result - 16’0.75”). She also came in 4th place in the 200 meter dash (Time - 28.81)
  • Sidney Glover won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 30’8.50”)
