A man convicted of attempted murder and other convictions in March was sentenced to 22 years in prison on Thursday in Cortland County Court.

Tyshawn Pittman received 22 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision for his sentencing of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and first-degree burglary. He was also sentenced to 12 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision for his second-degree criminal possession of a weapon conviction.

County judge Julie Campbell said that the sentences will run concurrently. Pittman was also sentenced as a second felony offender.

District attorney Patrick Perfetti recommended 25 years for Pittman’s sentencing, while defense attorney Jarrod Smith requested 12-to-15 years.

Pittman was convicted of all charges on March 19 of this year. The verdict came after three days of jury deliberation.

On Dec. 26, 2022, Pittman shot a woman in the face and neck on Main Street in the city of Cortland. A city police report stated that after Pittman shot the victim, his whereabouts were unknown. Later that same day, Pittman was found hiding on the third floor of an apartment building on Main Street.

The victim provided a statement during Thursday’s court session. Campbell issued an order of protection in favor of the victim.

“You completely destroyed me. It’s hard to sleep at night,” the victim said.

In regard to Pittman, the victim said, “You don’t deserve to be free. What you did is wrong.”

Pittman was prepared to comment on the decision in court but later declined after he spoke with his attorneys. Pittman plans to appeal his sentencing.
