At around 8 a.m. Friday, a correctional officer at the jail was in the process of escorting inmates to another part of the facility when inmate David Wegner, 30, lunged at the officer, head-butting him in the face, according to Lt. Todd Caufield with the Cortland County Sheriff's Office.

Several officers intervened to take control of Wegner and secure him at the facility. The officer received medical treatment for his injury, authorities said.

Wegner was arrested in December in connection with a reported assault on Main Street.

Wegner is awaiting arraignment on a second-degree assault charge, a class D felony,  in Cortland City Court.
