Cortland man sentenced in connection with drug investigation

CORTLAND, N.Y. — A Cortland man will spend one to three years in prison following his involvement in the sale of cocaine and crack cocaine in the city last year.

Bernard J. Dukes, 35, was sentenced Thursday in Cortland County Court on one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony.

On Nov. 12, 2015, the New York State Police Community Narcotics Enforcement Team, with assistance from the Cortland County Drug Task Force, executed a search warrant at Dukes' apartment on East Avenue.

Police found an unregistered pistol, ammunition, digital scales and other drug packaging material.

Dukes was also sentenced to 1 year in prison for "overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals."

According to court documents, Dukes was the owner of a Rotweiler named "Remy" that was being kept in a metal cage in a basement area at his residence.

As part of his sentencing, Dukes was required to forfeit $250, his pistol and ammunition.
