Cortland men's hockey ends season with win over Potsdam

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Four different players scored goals as the Cortland men's hockey team closed its season with a 4-1 victory versus Potsdam Saturday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons finished the season 10-13-2 and 5-9-2 in the conference, while the Bears dropped to 10-10-5 and 6-8-2.

Freshman Louis DiMatteo (Nobleton, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks) led Cortland with a goal and an assist. Senior Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers), sophomore Stefano Alonzi (Maple, ON/Burlington Cougars) and freshman Alex Storjohann (Anthem, AZ/Kirkland Lake) each added a goal. Sophomore Douglas Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden/New Jersey Rockets) collected two assists, and senior Cory Lauer (Mt. Juliet, TN/Toronto Lakeshore Patriots), junior Andrew Gleason (Vestal/Syracuse Stars) and freshman Michael Faliero (West Seneca/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) chipped in with one assist apiece. Senior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) registered 39 saves and tied the Cortland all-time win record with his 33rd career victory.

Sophomore Sean Winikates (Phoenix, AZ/Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) netted the goal for Potsdam. Senior Dylan Vander Esch (San Jose, CA/Hartford Wolfpack) and sophomore Vinny Guimond (Sorel-Tracy, QC/Gloucester Rangers) each assisted on the score. Senior Brendan McMenimen (Merrimac, MA/Islanders Hockey Club) made 23 saves.

Cortland took a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals from DiMatteo and Storjohann. DiMatteo scored on the power play at 15:15 when his shot from the point deflected in off a Potsdam defender. Storjohann then tipped in a pass right in front at 18:57 after Lauer flipped the puck in from the blue line.

After a scoreless second period, Nolan made it a 3-0 game at 10:08 of the third period with a one-time shot on the left side while Cortland was skating with a two-man advantage. The Bears pulled to within 3-1 at 11:41 when Winikates scored with a wrist shot on the left side of the slot on the power play. Potsdam then pulled McMenimen with 1:52 on the clock and went on the power play 39 seconds later but surrendered a short-handed goal to Alonzi with 1:02 remaining for the 4-1 final.
