Cortland Weather Outlook: Monday, November 30

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Monday, November 30, 2020:

A strong area of low pressure will track northeast into the region, ending up overhead this evening. With the path of the low directly overhead, some of the impacts of this system will actually be lessened for our area.

For example, it will be breezy today, but the strongest winds will remain well east of the area, similar to how the eye of a hurricane has light winds while the areas around the eye have strong winds.

Our winds will be strongest out ahead of the low during the morning and early afternoon hours. Southeast winds near 15 mph with gusts over 30 mph are likely during this time.

Later in the afternoon, winds will turn to the south and southwest with speeds dropping to 5-10 mph.

Widespread, steady rain will fall out ahead of the low this morning and into the midday hours. The precipitation will then break up for the afternoon, becoming more scattered. There still should be plenty of rainy times during the afternoon and a few heavier downpours will be possible.

By the late afternoon, as the low moves overhead, the rain should mostly end, save for a few isolated showers. That will continue into the evening as dry air wraps around the low as it tracks north toward Lake Ontario.

As long as the center of the low travels overhead or stays west over the Finger Lakes, temperatures should get into the low 50s this afternoon and early this evening. Cooler air will gradually wrap in overnight with temperatures retreating into the 40s.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Tuesday: Mostly cloudy with rain showers. Some snow mixing in by evening. Morning temperatures in the low 40s. Afternoon temperatures in the mid 30s.

Wednesday: Snow showers likely. Morning temperatures near 30. Afternoon temperatures in the mid 30s.

Thursday: A mix of sun and clouds. Morning temperatures in the mid 20s. Afternoon temperatures in the upper 30s.

Friday: A mix of sun and clouds. Maybe a shower or flurry. Morning temperatures near 30. Afternoon temperatures near 40.
