Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 3rd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Olympians took down Southern Cayuga with a score of 9-1 at home in order to improve to a 2-0 record. 

“I was pleased with how involved everyone was tonight, especially our upperclassmen getting the underclassmen involved and distributing on offense,” said Marathon head coach Elizabeth Duncan. 

The Olympians’ offense was led by Abbie Ensign who scored a hat-trick (3 goals), Brooke Tillotson (2 goals & 2 assists), Delta Barber (2 goals & 1 assist), Addison Oram (1 goal & 2 assists), Paige Hurlburt (1 goal), Breanna VanDee (1 assist), Anna Hoyt (1 assist), and Lindsay Courtney (1 assist). 

Southern Cayuga’s only goal was scored by Samantha Johnson. 

Marathon’s next game is at home on Wednesday, September 8th against Lansing at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost 0-2 against Auburn on Friday.

“Cortland struggled to connect passes today and found themselves giving the ball away with lots of vertical passes,” said Cortland head coach Ilona Ryon. “ Auburn was fast and aggressive and used long throw-ins to work the ball up the field.”

Auburn’s two goals were scored in the first half by ​​Emma Hastings and Grace Oliver.

The now 1-1 Purple Tigers will look forward to their next game against Central Square at home on Wednesday, September 8th at 5pm.  

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Varsity Boys Soccer team defeated Auburn 9-1 to start their season off with a 1-0 record. 

Cortland was led offensively by ​​Nick Yonta with a hat-trick (3 goals), David Kelchner (2 goals & 1 assist), Jack Phelan (1 goal & 2 assists), Dmytro Onyshchuk (1 goal & 1 assist), Max Gambitta (1 goal), Dennis Topchiy (1 goal), and Caden Albright (1 assist). 

Cortland goalkeeper Scott Hourigan recorded a total of 3 saves in the game. 

Auburn’s only goal was scored by Gabriel Volo. 

The Cortland Purple Tigers will be taking on Greene at home on Tuesday, September 7th at 5pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. Solvay

The Homer Trojans beat Solvay at home with a score of 3-0 to start their season off with a 1-0 record. 

All three of Homer’s goals were scored in the second half of the game by Tyler Van Etten (off a rebound from Laramy Ramirez-Velasquez), Zander Johnson (assisted by Lance Heyer), and Damian Brown (assisted by Adam Karam). 

According to Homer head coach Christopher Guay, the Trojan’s solid defensive effort was led by Evan Butts, Conor Powers and Tristan Allen with Brayden Fox in the net behind them. Fox recorded a total of 5 saves in the game.

The Trojans will now look forward to improving their record as they take on Mexico at home on Tuesday, September 7th at 7pm.  

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. LaFayette

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated LaFayette in four sets on Friday in order to improve to a 2-0 record. 

LaFayette was able to win the first set by only 2 points, but the Trojans then gathered themselves to take them down in the next three sets to get the win. 

The Trojans were led by Kloey Roos (8 kills, 4 aces & 16 digs), Mya Updyke (14 assists & 8 digs), Lilly Sorenson (5 kills, 3 aces & 8 digs), and Mallory Douglass (12 digs). 

LaFayette was led by Layla Isaacs (5 kills, 4 aces & 11 digs) and Chylure Bucktooth (2 aces, 7 assists & 7 digs). 

Up next, the Trojans will take on Cortland for a County rivalry game at home on Wednesday, September 8th at 6pm.
