Name of driver announced involved in fatal car accident

The name of the driver involved in the fatal motor vehicle accident on the Port Watson Street bridge in the town of Cortlandville has been announced, according to an updated Cortland County Sheriff’s Office report on Monday.

At about 8:44 p.m. this past Saturday, the driver who has been identified as Steven W. Cribbs, aged 44, was traveling west on Route 11 when left the roadway and struck the bridge, the report states.

A report from the Cortlandville Fire Department noted that following the accident, Cribbs was found unconscious and trapped in his vehicle. First responders removed Cribbs from the vehicle and transferred him to the TLC ambulance service.

The county sheriff’s report notes Cribbs was transported to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Cribbs was the only occupant of the vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash, the report continues.

The county sheriff’s office is currently investigating the cause of the accident. The area of the accident Saturday evening was shut down for about four hours and re-opened early Sunday morning, the report states.

Along with the county sheriff’s office and the Cortlandville Fire Department, TLC ambulance, the City of Cortland Fire Department and the New York State Department of Transportation provided assistance Saturday evening.
