Local fire departments extinguished a fire Tuesday morning at a two-apartment complex structure on 32 Lincoln Ave., according to a release from the City of Cortland Fire Department.

City of Cortland firefighters dispatched to the fire around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, a “significant amount of smoke” emanated from the structure and started “going across the street,” city fire chief Wayne Friedman noted over the phone Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters narrowed the source of the fire to a bedroom in one of the apartments. The fire was quickly extinguished, including a part of the fire that “traveled through the walls to the second floor,” Friedman said. The fire did not reach the attic of the structure, he added.

No injuries were reported. Only two occupants were in the structure at the time of the fire, Friedman said. He added, there was “enough water and smoke damage that the residents couldn’t re-occupy the building.”

The American Red Cross is currently assisting the residents of the apartments with temporary housing, the release states.

The city’s fire investigation division, as well as the New York State Fire Investigation Bureau, are investigating the cause of the fire. All units, with the exception of members of each fire investigation team, cleared the scene at 12:30 p.m.

The Homer and Cortlandville Fire Departments assisted city firefighters at the scene, with McGraw and Virgil Fire Departments on standby at the city firehouse on Court Street. The city police department also provided assistance on scene.
