County officials propose new finance position

At the Cortland County Finance and Administration Committee meeting on Tuesday, county officials proposed and unanimously approved the creation of a new position for the Department of Budget and Finance.

The new position, said the county’s Budget and Finance Director Andrea Herzog, would help find more economic efficiencies at the county level.

“Our department is responsible for the accounting records of the county,” she said. “We really need someone who has more of those skills to help us find more efficiencies and just to do even more than we already are.”

The resolution proposing the new position abolishes a previous “full-time principal account clerk” vacancy. The hourly wage range for that position was anywhere between $19.87 to $24.90 for 35 hours of work per week (with benefits). The new assistant accountant position would be paid anywhere from $23.57 to $29.54 per hour for 35 hours of work per week (with benefits).

This new position is pending approval from the County Legislature. If approved, it would be created on March 24.

Finance and Administration Committee chair Christopher Newell (R-LD11) asked Herzog if the department had candidates in mind to fill in the position.

“We offered (the previous position) to one person, but the wage did not compensate for a change in hours. Unfortunately, the other applicants did not have the qualifications we were looking for,” Herzog said. “We had to change the title of the position to have candidates meet the qualifications we were looking for.”
