Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 29th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Lady Eagles lost a tough game against Otselic Valley with a score of 3-14. This was supposed to be a double-header, but according to McGraw head coach Becky Vanwagenen the second game never finished due to the injury that occurred. 

With this loss, McGraw has fallen to an 0-5 record.

McGraw’s next game will be played against Marathon at home this upcoming Wednesday (May 4th) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Skaneateles

The Homer Lady Trojans improved to a 3-6 overall record after beating Skaneateles on the road with a score of 14-10.

Up next, Homer is scheduled to take on New Hartford on the road today (April 30th) at noon. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Moravia

The Marathon Lady Olympians won 17-2 against Moravia on the road Friday afternoon. This win brings Marathon up to a 5-4 record. 

The Lady Olympians were led by Brie Carter (8 strikeouts thrown), Marissa Allen (3 runs, 3 hits & 1 home-run), and Brooke Tillotson (1 home-run, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s).

Up next, Marathon will play against McGraw on the road on Wednesday (May 4th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Syracuse

The Cortland Purple Tigers won 10-5 against Syracuse in order to keep their unbeaten streak going. The Purple Tigers now hold an 11-0 record. 

Cortland was led by Tyler Blake (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Caden Congdon (1 run & 1 hit), Ethan Hay (2 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Kooper Knabe (1 run & 2 strikeouts thrown), Andrew Partigianoni (1 hit & 1 RBI), Caden Albright (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Ethan Johnson (1 hit & 1 RBI), Scott Hourigan (1 run, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 2 strikeouts thrown), Christopher Yang (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), and Liam Woodward (1 strikeout thrown). 

Syracuse was led by Hunter Kirnie (2 runs & 1 hit), Reagan Rifanburg (1 hit), Noah Kisslestein (1 run, 2 hits, 2 RBI’s & 1 strikeout thrown), Joey Ilacqua (1 run & 2 hits), Jose Sanjurjo (1 hit & 1 RBI), Calvin Atkinson (2 hits & 1 RBI), and Eli Livingston (1 run & 1 hit). 

Up next, Cortland is scheduled to host Auburn on Monday (May 2nd) at 6:15pm. 

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Golden Eagles defeated Otselic Valley in both games of a double-header Friday evening. 

The Eagles won the first game 6-4 and the second game 6-5. McGraw now holds a 2-2 record.

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Olympians won their first match of the season against Southern Cayuga on Friday with a team score of 197-205. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Trojans lost to Cazenovia with an overall team score of 1-4 Thursday afternoon.

Here is a breakdown of Thursday’s matches:

  • First Singles: Homer’s Spencer Rusyniak defeated Cazenovia’s Traian Cherciu (6-2 & 7-6). 
  • Second Singles: Cazenovia’s Garret Lounsbury defeated Homer’s Raymond Meng (7-5 & 6-4).
  • Third Singles: Cazenovia’s Jake Wardell defeated Homer’s Nik Kruman (6-2 & 6-3). 
  • First Doubles: Cazenovia’s Andrew Falso and Gabe Reagan defeated Homer’s Jake Camp and Conor Powers (4-6, 7-5 & 6-1). 
  • Second Doubles: Cazenovia’s Cy Lurie and Carter Ruddy defeated Homer’s Jackson Henderson and Brandon McLaughlin (7-6 & 6-4). 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs Jordan-Elbridge

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Jordan Elbridge with a score of 18-3 in order to improve to a 7-1 overall record. 

Homer was led by Kloey Roos (7 goals & 3 assists), Sydney O'Donnell (2 goals), Maria Partis (2 goals & 1 assist), Stella Stockwin (1 goal & 1 assist), Camryn Calabro (1 goal), Fiona Hartnett (1 goal), Hannah Slade (2 goals & 1 assist), Madison Wethje (1 goal), Gracie Patriarco (1 goal & 3 assists), and Sarah Sovocool (8 saves). 

Jordan-Elbridge was led by Gabrielle Gunnip (2 goals & 1 assist), Makayla Penird (1 goal), and Riley Crawford (1 assist). 

Up next, Homer will host Westhill on Monday (May 2nd) at 4:15pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs Jamesville-Dewitt

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost 1-15 against Jamesville-Dewitt on Friday, bringing them down to a 1-5 record. 

Cortland’s only goal of the game was scored by Olivia Magin. 

Cortland goalie Hayden Bulger made a total of 6 saves in the game. 

Jamesville-Dewitt was led by Merris Kessler (1 goal & 2 assists), Brooke Bort (3 goals), Sydney Balotin (2 goals & 2 assists), Kate Barclay (4 goals & 1 assist), Caroline Stone (2 goals & 2 assists), and Cambell Endries (1 goal). 

Up next, Cortland is scheduled to play Horseheads at home today at 10am.

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Schools

The Homer boys and girls track & field teams competed in the Onondaga Central Invitational on Friday. The Homer boys’ team finished tied for 11th out of 20 teams, while the Homer girls’ team placed 8th out of 18 teams. 

Here are some highlights of both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Cooper Van Dee (2:13.2), Zane Moheimani (2:19.7), Damian Brown (2:22.0), and Tommy Mahunik (2:09.9) won 1st place in the the 4x800 meter relay (Overall Time- 9:05.14) setting the meet record in the process.
  • Tommy Mahunik placed 2nd in the open 800 meter run (Time- 2:04.87). His time was a personal best. 
  • Cooper Van Dee placed 6th in the 400 meter run (Time- 54.20). 
  • Jonah Campos placed 6th in the discus throw event (Result- 98’10”). His throw was a personal best and qualifies him for Sectionals.

Homer Girls

  • Hannah McMasters won 1st place in the shot put event (Result- 31’10.25”). She also placed 2nd in the discus throw (Result- 83’6”). Her discus throw was a personal best and qualifies her for Sectionals).
  • Jane Gugerty placed 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time- 71.31). She also placed 5th in the triple jump event (Result- 31’4.25”). Her 400 meter hurdles time was a season best and qualified her for the State Qualifier. 
  • Camdyn Cole tied for 6th in the high jump event (Result- 4’6”).

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools

The Marathon boys and girls track & field teams competed in the “Legends of the Night” meet against multiple schools on Friday. 

Here are some highlights of both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Conor Holland won 1st place in the high jump event (Result- 5’9”). He also placed 2nd in the 400 meter run (Time- 54.27) and came in 4th in the 200 meter dash (Time- 24.93). 
  • Braeden Morrison placed 7th in the 400 meter run (Time- 57.82). 

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco came in 2nd in the 400 meter run (Time- 1:03.87).  She also placed 4th in the pole vault event (Result- 7’7”). 
  • Addison Oram placed 5th in the 200 meter dash (Time- 28.87).
