A strong cold front will blast through the region today, resulting in a significant change in the weather.

This morning, rain showers and blustery south and southeast winds will continue. The wind will not be a strong as it was overnight, but will still gust over 30 mph at times.

Late this morning, the cold front will move in. Rain will increase ahead of the front and will change over to snow. The change to snow is the key moment to begin preparing for the falling temperatures.

As temperatures rapidly drop, a flash freeze is possible, making travel treacherous until the roads can be treated. This is most likely to occur between 10 AM and Noon.

During the afternoon, southwest winds will increase with gusts of 35-45 mph. Temperatures will freefall through the 20s and into the 10s. Snow showers will continue off and on, but with accumulations limited to an inch or two.

The wind will easily blow around any snow that falls, reducing visibility and producing areas of drifting snow.

By this evening, most of the snow should be over, though blowing and drifting will continue. Temperatures will fall into the single-digits, and a few areas could be near or below zero overnight.

With southwest winds continuing to gust over 35 mph, hazardous wind chills will develop, reaching as low as -20 overnight.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Saturday: Windy. Scattered snow showers possible with localized light accumulations. Blowing and drifting snow. Morning lows in the low 0s. Afternoon highs in the low 10s.

Sunday: Snow showers likely with some accumulation. Blowing and drifting snow. Morning lows in the mid 0s. Afternoon highs in the upper 10s.

Monday: A few snow showers. Otherwise, just cloudy and not as windy. Morning lows in the upper 0s. Afternoon highs in the low 20s.

Tuesday: A few flurries. Morning lows in the upper 0s. Afternoon highs in the mid 20s.
