Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 20th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. DeRuyter

McGraw fell to a 1-4 record after losing to DeRuyter with a score of 11-19 at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex Thursday evening. 

McGraw was led by Leah Terwilliger (4 runs & 3 hits), Josslyn Eaton (1 run), Hannah Wilson (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Kirsten Tetreault (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Jaden Marshall (1 run), Haylee Bassett (1 run, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), and Katelynn Millard (1 hit). 

DeRuyter was led by Tara Lynn Conway (2 runs), Olivia Lidell (3 runs), Shanley Nichols (1 run), Mya Woods (1 run & 1 hit), Gracie Barber (2 runs & 1 hit), Rhya Richardson (4 runs & 1 hit), Molly Amidon (2 runs & 2 hits), Amaya Rounsaville (2 runs & 1 hit), and Kelsey Brown (2 runs & 3 hits). 

McGraw is now scheduled to play Marathon at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Friday (April 21st) at 5pm. 

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Hannibal

The Homer Lady Trojans improved to a 2-4 record after bearing Hannibal with a score of 6-4. 

Homer was led by Khloe Young (2 runs), Alexandria Kellaway (1 run & 1 hit), Allyson Verfuss (1 run & 1 hit), Cecelia Rappleyea (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Catherine Apker (2 runs), Jenna Henderson (1 hit, 1 RBI & 4 strikeouts thrown), and Lyla Read (2 RBI’s). 

Hannibal was led by Eryka DeRocha (1 run), Darian Palmer (1 hit), Mikayla Miner (1 run), Sandy Allen (2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Kiley Emmons (2 runs), and Tenly Baker (11 strikeouts thrown).

Homer is now scheduled to play Cazenovia at Cicero-North Syracuse on Saturday (April 22nd) at 2:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Moravia

The Marathon Lady Olympians won 15-3 against Moravia on Thursday. With this win, Marathon improved to an overall record of 2-4.

Marathon was mainly led by Izabella Conklin (12 strikeouts thrown), Audrey Jasper (3 runs & 4 hits), and Ellery Ensign (3 runs, 3 hits).

Up next, Marathon is scheduled to play McGraw at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Friday (April 21st) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Hannibal

The Homer Trojans defeated Hannibal with a score of 10-0 after five innings Thursday afternoon. With this win, Homer improved to a 2-4 record. 

Homer was led by Mitchell Earle (1 run, 1 hit & 14 strikeouts thrown), Anderson Read (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Tristan Allen (2 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Maddox Johnson (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Graydon Hickey (1 hit), Eli McMahon (1 run & 1 hit), Jeffrey Stauber (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), and Noah Young (1 hit & 1 RBI).

Hannibal was led by Alex Miller (5 strikeouts thrown). 

According to the Homer Athletics website, Homer is scheduled to play Chenango Valley at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Saturday (April 22nd) at 10am.

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. DeRuyter

The McGraw Eagles defeated DeRuyter 9-3 Thursday evening in order to improve to a 5-2 record. 

McGraw was led by Riley VanLiew (1 hit & 1 RBI), Thomas Lea (1 hit & 1 RBI), Blair Mulcahy (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Calob Sutton (2 runs & 1 hit), Nathan Stiles (1 run, 2 RBI’s & 5 strikeouts thrown), Blake Bergey (1 hit & 2 strikeouts thrown), Lucas Monroe (1 run & 1 hit), Nick Sutton (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Jaydon Bassett (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), and Elijah VanDee (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI).

McGraw’s next game will be played against Madison on the road on Monday (April 24th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Jamesville-Dewitt

The Cortland Tigers lost 1-23 at home against Jamesville-Dewitt Thursday night. 

Cortland’s only goal was scored by Ryan Kline and assisted by Benjamin McGrath. 

Jamesville-Dewitt was led by Gannon Kessler (6 goals & 1 assist), Nick Miller (1 assist), Andrew Laubenstein (1 goal), Alexander Binsack (1 goal), Tom Tracy (1 goal), Lucas Patchen (3 assists), Noah Marshall (1 goal), Graham Kesselring (2 goals & 2 assists), Samuel Brazell (4 goals & 6 assists), Ian Delpha (2 goals), Jonah Buff (1 goal), Caden Parker (1 assist), Eli Goldberg (1 goal), Mario Streiff (1 goal & 2 assists), Foster Kesselring (1 goal), Aidan Bates (1 goal), Ian McIntyre (7 saves), and Emmet McCaull (6 saves).

Cortland’s next game will be played on the road against Chenango Valley at 2pm this Saturday (April 22nd). 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Central Square

The Cortland Lady Tigers fell to an overall record of 1-5 after losing to Central Square with a close score of 8-10. 

Cortland was led by Aubree Larkin (2 goals), Olivia Magin (1 goal), Valerosa Gambitta (2 goals & 1 assist), Gabrielle Cranfield (2 goals & 1 assist), Mya Wiley (1 assist), and Hayden Bulger (3 saves).  

Central Square was led by Hannah Reichard (4 goals), Melayna Miller (3 goals & 2 assists), Jenna James (1 goal), Grace Waskiewicz (1 assist), Lauren McCorry (2 goals), and Arianna Bailey (7 saves). 

Up next, Cortland will play East Syracuse Minoa on the road this Saturday (April 22nd) at 11am. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Lansing

The Marathon Olympians played against Lansing Thursday afternoon. Marathon lost the match with a team score of 196-171 (Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins).
