Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 28th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday's events:

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Olympians lost 1-17 against Union Springs, and fell to an overall record of 1-11. 

Marathon also celebrated senior night, where a total of four seniors (Tristin Byron, Jonathan Forrest, Eli Hoyt, and Braydin Drake) were celebrated. 

“I think the emotions of the night (senior night) got to us early and we made a few mistakes that put us in a hole,” said Marathon head coach Bryan Hoyt. “With a team as good as Union Springs, you can’t put yourself in that situation.”

Marathon was led by Zachary Birdsall (1 hit & 4 strikeouts thrown), Blake Birdsall (1 hit), Jeffery Daugherty (1 run & 2 hits), and Jonathan Forrest (1 hit).

Union Springs was mainly led by Aaron Johnson (5 runs, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Dustin Walawender (1 run, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), and Tyler Weaver (3 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s).

Up next, Marathon will play Union Springs on the road on Monday (May 1st) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Brookfield

The McGraw Eagles improved to a 6-5 record after defeating Brookfield with a score of 8-3 at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex Friday afternoon. 

McGraw was led by Jaydon Bassett (2 runs, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 13 strikeouts thrown), Blake Bergey (1 hit & 1 RBI), Lea Thomas (1 run & 1 hit), Blair Mulcahy (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Calob Sutton (1 run & 1 hit), Nick Sutton (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), and Riley VanLiew (2 runs & 2 hits). 

Note: stats for Brookfield were not made available by the time this article was written. 

McGraw is now scheduled to play Brookfield again, but on the road this upcoming Tuesday (May 2nd) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Solvay

The Cortland Lady Purple Tigers lost a tough game with a score of 0-15, making them fall to an 8-4 record. 

Cortland pitcher Molly Steve threw 2 strikeouts in the game. 

Solvay was led by Jayde Coyne (1 run), Gianna D'Eredita (2 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Delaney Kaszubinski (2 runs & 3 RBI’s), Susie Overend (2 runs, 2 hits & 4 RBI’s), Ellyahna Olvarria (1 RBI), Rachel Willsey (3 runs), Jenna Wing (3 runs, 2 hits & 6 strikeouts thrown), Nevaeh Baker (1 run), Jaidyn Kotlarz (3 runs & 1 RBI), and Hannah Haase (1 RBI). 

Up next, Cortland will play on the road against Fulton on Monday (May 1st) at 5pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Morrisville-Eaton

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated Morrisville-Eaton 4-1, and improved to a 6-2 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Maddison Streichert (2 hits), Kayle Brenchley (1 hit & 8 strikeouts thrown), Lucy Finch (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), and Madison Stover (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s). 

Morrisville-Eaton was led by Samantha Cook (1 hit), Ella Griffin (2 hits), Lindsay Sternburg (1 run & 1 hit), and Aspen Koehl (4 strikeouts thrown).

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played at home on Tuesday (May 2nd) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Golf: McGraw vs. Madison

The McGraw Eagles played against Madison Friday afternoon. McGraw won the match with a team score of 271-323 (Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Schools

The Homer Trojans competed at the Onondaga Central invitational Friday evening. 

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Jonah Campos placed 3rd in the shot event (Result - 40’11.5”). He also came in 4th in the discus throw (Result - 109’6”)
  • Logan Darling got 3rd place in the discus throw (Result - 111’1”).
  • Dylan Pittsley recorded a personal best triple jump (Result - 35’2”). His jump qualifies him for sectionals

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagaard finished 2nd in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:29.60). She also placed 4th in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.61). Her 800 meter result qualifies her for sectionals 
  • Camdyn Cole placed 2nd in the long jump event (Result - 15’10”)
  • Jane Gugerty came in 4th in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 18.05)
  • Mia Knight (2:54.7), Amelia Wagner (3:01.0), Lydia Andre (2:58.9), and Haley Tucker (3:01.3) got 5th place in the 4x800 meter relay with an official time of 11:55.96
  • Natalie Funk (74.0), Camdyn Cole (69.8), Jane Gugerty (68.9) and Ingrid Aagaard (65.3) placed 5th in the 4x400 meter relay with an official time of 4:38.02

Varsity Track & Field: Cincinnatus vs. Multiple Schools

The Cincinnatus Lions competed at the Onondaga Central invitational Friday evening. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cincinnatus boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cincinnatus Boys

  • Gavin Collins threw a 23’0” in the shot put event.
  • Kisner Haydn threw a shot put result of 22’6.50”

Cincinnatus Girls

  • Justice Crane got 3rd place in the high jump event (Result - 4’8”)
  • Madelyn Pittsley placed 3rd in the long jump (Result - 15’3.25”)

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools

The Marathon Olympians competed in the Gerry O'Donnell Invitational on Friday. 

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Conor Holland placed 4th in both the 400 meter run (Time - 54.55) and the high jump event (Result - 5’06”). He also came in 5th in the long jump event (Result - 17’03.50”)

Marathon Girls

  • Shaelin Phillips placed 5th in the 2,000 meter steeplechase (Time - 9:20.58)
  • Catherine Newkirk got 6th place in the triple jump (Result - 29’02”)
  • Addison Oram came in 3rd in the high jump event (Result - 4’06”)
  • Abigail Trabucco tied for 3rd place in the pole vault event (Result - 7’0”)
