Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 1st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Syracuse (Double-Header)

The Cortland Purple Tigers played a double-header against Syracuse at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex Monday evening. 

Cortland lost the first game, but won the second game.

Cortland lost the first game of the double-header with a score of 9-12. 

Cortland was led by Ethan Johnson (2 runs & 2 hits), Caden Albright (1 run, 1 hit & 1 strikeout thrown), Luke Rogoff (1 run & 1 hit), Christopher Yang (1 run & 1 hit), Robbie Atkins (1 run & 1 hit), Andrew Partigianoni (1 run), Danny Jackson (1 hit & 1 RBI), Liam Woodard (1 run), Owen Johnson (1 run), Tyler Gilbert (1 hit), and Antonio Terrazas (4 strikeouts thrown). 

Syracuse was led by Devin Shepard (1 run & 2 hits), Weslin Gutierrez (1 run, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Jackson Grier (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Mason Greco (2 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), RJ Benedetto (1 run & 1 hit), Joey Ilacqua (1 run & 1 RBI), Calvin Atkinson (1 run & 1 RBI), Gavin Zubrzycki (2 runs, 1 hit, 1 RBI & 3 strikeouts thrown), Liam Kisselstein (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), and Reagan Rifanburg (2 strikeouts thrown).

The Purple Tigers won the second game of the double-header with a close score of 6-4. 

Cortland was led by Andrew Partigianoni (1 run & 1 hit), Caden Albright (1 run & 1 hit), Ethan Johnson (2 hits & 7 strikeouts thrown), Luke Rogoff (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Danny Jackson (1 run & 1 hit), Christopher Yang (1 run), Liam Woodard (1 run & 1 RBI), Robbie Atkins (2 hits & 2 RBI’s), and Owen Johnson (3 strikeouts thrown).

Syracuse was led by Odlanier Andrades (1 run & 2 hits), Weslin Gutierrez (1 run), Jackson Grier (1 run & 1 hit), Mason Greco (2 runs & 1 RBI), RJ Benedetto (1 run & 1 RBI), Joey Ilacqua (1 hit, 1 RBI & 2 strikeouts thrown), Liam Kisselstein (1 hit), and Colin Murphy (1 hit, 1 RBI & 5 strikeouts thrown). 

With these results, Cortland now holds a 9-3 overall record. 

Cortland is now scheduled to host Auburn at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Thursday (May 4th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Moravia

The Marathon Lady Olympians improved to a 5-8 record after beating Moravia with a close score of 14-13. 

“We played well for six innings and totally lost our focus in the seventh, and gave up a five run lead to go down 13-11.” said Marathon head coach Jamie Bush. “We were able to come back with three in the bottom of the seventh to get the win. It was not our best finish.”

Up next, Marathon will play on the road against Trumansburg on Friday (April 5th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Groton & Whitney Point

The Marathon Olympians participated in a meet against Groton and Whitney Point Monday afternoon.  

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Conor Holland won 1st place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 12.68) and the long jump event (Result - 17’2.50”). He also came in 2nd in both the 110 meter hurdles (Time - 18.83) and the high jump (Result 5’6”). Holland also placed 3rd in the shot put (Result - 29’8.75”)
  • Andrew Edsall won 1st place in the 3,200 meter run (Time 11:53.97). He also placed 3rd in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:13.54)

Marathon Girls

  • Catherine Newkirk won 1st place in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 19.36) and in the triple jump event (Result - 29’7.50”). She also got 2nd place in the 200 meter run (Time - 29.87)
  • Scout Morse came in 2nd in the long jump event (Result - 12’6”). She also placed 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 21.64)
  • Cheyenne Mathews came in 2nd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 15.72)
  • Larina Cochran won 1st place in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:41.40). She also came in 3rd in the 3,000 meter run (Time - 15:03.01)
  • Rylee Thomas placed 2nd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:58.76)
  • Abigail Trabucco won the 400 meter run (Time - 1:11.36)
  • Shaelin Phillips won 1st place in the 800 meter run (Time - 3:00.0) and the 3,000 meter run (Time - 13:38.51)
  • Abigail Edsall placed 2nd in the 800 meter run (Time - 3:11.14) and the 3,000 meter run (Time - 14:54.16)
  • Addison Oram won 1st place in the long jump event (Result - 12’8.25”) and the high jump (Result - 4’6”). She also placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash (Time - 30.87)
  • Sophia Hansen placed 2nd in the triple jump event (Result - 25’6.75”)
  • Megan Howard won 1st place in the discus throw (Result - 70’11”). She also came in 3rd in the shot put (Result - 21’2”)
