Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 9th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Cazenovia with a score of 10-7 on the road in order to improve to a 4-9 overall record. 

Homer was led by Ella Spanbauer (4 goals & 1 assist), Lilly Sorenson (2 goals & 2 assists), Caitlin McCloy (2 goals), Lauren Franco (1 goal & 1 assist), Brayden Partigianoni (1 assist), and Aislynn Cobb (11 saves). 

Cazenovia was led by Katie Rajkowski (3 goals & 1 assist), Riley Knapp (2 goals), Madison DeAngelis (1 goal & 2 assists), Hayden Bubble (1 goal), and Eliza Smith (3 saves). 

Up next, Homer will host Skaneateles at Homer high school on Thursday (May 11th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. East Syracuse Minoa

The Cortland Lady Purple Tigers celebrated senior night with a 13-7 win over East Syracuse Minoa Tuesday night.

Cortland will face Syracuse City on the road this Thursday (May 11th). The game is scheduled to begin at 5pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Fulton

The Cortland Purple Tigers fell to a 6-9 record after losing a close game against Fulton with a score of 12-13. 

Cortland was led by Benjamin McGrath (5 goals & 2 assists), Finn Thomas (3 goals & 1 assist), Ryan Kline (1 goal & 1 assist), Bodey McGrath (1 goal), Jon Henry (1 goal), Joseph Banewicz (1 goal), and Declan Vail (5 saves). 

Fulton was led by Ryan Carroll (7 goals & 1 assist), Xavier Doty (4 goals & 1 assist), Landon Wakefield (1 goal & 1 assist), Karsen Conn (1 goal), and Walter Metcalf Jr. (13 saves). 

Cortland’s next game will be played at home this Thursday (May 11th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Trojans won 11-7 against Cazenovia. With this win, Homer improved to a 5-8 record. 

Homer was led by Hunter Riehlman (1 goal & 4 assists), Alexander Votra (2 goals & 1 assist), Reid Partis (2 goals & 1 assist), Mitchell Riter (2 goals), Cooper Swartz (1 assist), Evan Butts (1 goal), Sam Sorenson (2 goals), Michael Stiles (1 goal), and Benjamin Bradshaw (18 saves). 

Cazenovia was led by Brendon Barnard (3 goals), Forrest Ives (2 goals & 1 assist), DB Falge (1 goal), Alex Kuper (1 goal), and Tucker Ives (6 saves). 

Homer is scheduled to face off against Skaneateles on the road this Friday (May 12th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. DeRuyter

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions won 7-5 on the road against DeRuyter Tuesday afternoon in order to improve to a 10-4 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Payton Gerrard (4 runs & 4 hits), Lucy Finch (3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Madison Stover (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Jarisa Temple (1 run & 1 hit), Mandi Waltz (1 run & 1 RBI), Piper Landers (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Kaylee Brenchley (10 strikeouts thrown).

DeRuyter was led by Molly Amidon (1 run & 2 hits), Rhya Richardson (3 runs & 3 hits), Olivia Lidell (2 hits), Myah Woods (1 run), Kelsey Brown (1 hit), and Rhya Richardson (8 strikeouts thrown). 

Up next, Cincinnatus is scheduled to play Marathon at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary today (May 10th) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Morrisville-Eaton

The McGraw Lady Eagles fell to an overall record of 2-12 after losing to Morrisville-Eaton with a score of 4-8. 

McGraw was led by Jaden Marshall (1 run & 1 hit), Adrianna Stacconi (1 run), Josslyn Eaton (1 hit, 2 RBI’s & 8 strikeouts thrown), Camdyn Caperton (1 run & 1 hit), Jenna Nye (1 RBI).

Morrisville-Eaton was led by Addison Shantal (3 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Katelyn Doxtater (1 run, 1 hit, 1 RBI & 4 strikeouts thrown), Lindsay Sternburg (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Aspen Koehl (1 run & 1 strikeout thrown), Emily Payne (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Samantha Cook (1 hit), Daisy Soden (1 run), and Abby Jacobs (2 RBI’s).

McGraw will play Tully on the road today (May 10th) at 4:30pm.  

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Solvay

Homer has fallen to a 4-8 record after losing a close game against Solvay with a score of 4-5 Tuesday afternoon. 

Homer was led by Catherine Apker (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Jenna Henderson (1 run & 7 strikeouts thrown), Allyson Verfuss (2 hits), Cecelia Rappleyea (1 run & 2 hits), Lyla Read (1 RBI), Karigan Quaile (1 hit), and Khloe Young (1 run & 1 hit). 

Solvay was led by Jenna Wing (1 run, 2 hits & 13 strikeouts thrown), Hannah Haase (1 hit & 1 RBI), Gianna D'Eredita (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Ellyahna Olvarria (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Jayde Coyne (1 run), and Lismariely Mendez (1 run). 

Homer will host Chittenango at Homer high school on Thursday (May 11th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Solvay

The Homer baseball team won 6-4 against Solvay Tuesday evening. With this win, Homer improved to a 6-7 record. 

Homer was led by Mitchell Earle (2 runs & 2 hits), Tristan Allen (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Jeffrey Stauber (2 hits), Noah Young (1 run, 1 hit 7 1 strikeout thrown), Anderson Read (1 run & 1 hit), Tyler VanEtten (1 run & 1 RBI), Graydon Hickey (2 hits & 1 RBI), and Maddox Johnson (2 strikeouts thrown). 

Solvay’s runs were scored by Joseph Perez (1 run), Jacob Bigelow (1 run), Gray Caldron (1 run), and Cameron Cappetta (1 run). 

Homer is scheduled to host Chittenango at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex this Thursday (May 11th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Olympians lost on the road 2-5 against Union Springs Tuesday afternoon. With this loss, Marathon has fallen to a 1-12 record. 

Marathon’s runs were scored by Zachary Birdsall (1 run) and Blake Birdsall. 

Union Spring’s runs were scored by Anthony DeAnglelis (1 run), Ebon Brown (1 run), Asa Brown (1 run), Mike Ward (1 run), and Jack Walters (1 run). 

Up next, Marathon will play Groton on the road today (May 10th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Dryden

The Marathon Olympians played against Dryden Tuesday afternoon. Marathon recorded a team score of 196. Dryden was not able to record a team score, due to them not having a full team.

Varsity Boys Golf: McGraw vs. Cincinnatus

The Cortland County rivalry matchup between the McGraw Eagles and the Cincinnatus Lions ended up with Cincinnatus winning with an overall team score of 271-290. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Chittenango & Living World Academy

The Homer Trojans competed in a meet at Chittenango High School against Chittenango and Living World Academy. 

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Caleb Ficchi won 1st place in the pole vault event (Result - 9’6”), which qualifies him for Sectionals. 
  • Jonah Campos won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 42’10.5”)
  • Logan Darling won 1st place in the discus throw (Result - 125’ 5”).
  • Orie Bush, Jonah Campos, Dwight Eldridge, and Logan Darling won 1st place in the throwers’ 4x100 relay (Time - 52.7)
  • Levi Guay won 1st place in the 400 meter hurdles (Time 70.4)
  • Damian Brown came in 2nd in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 11:58.0)

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagard won 1st place in the 200 meter run (Time - 28.3) and in the 400 meter run (Time - 62.8). She also placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.6)
  • Jane Gugerty won 1st place in the 100 hurdles (Time - 17.3) and in the 400 meter hurdles(Time 71.4)
  • Camdyn Cole won 1st place in the triple jump (Result - 31’11”). She also got 2nd place in the long jump event (Result - 14’11.5”). 
  • Natalie Funk, Camdyn Cole, Jane Gugerty, and Ingrid Aagaard won the 4x100 meter relay (Time - 53.3)
  • Mia Knight (2:47.3), Amelia Wagner (2:59.1), Lydia Andre (2:53.1), and Haley Tucker (3:00.5) placed 2nd in the 4x800 meter relay (Time - 11:39.6).
  • Natalie Funk (69.5), Mia Knight (75.5), Jane Gugerty (68.9), and Lydia Andre (73.5) came in 2nd  in the 4x400 meter relay (Time - 4:47.3)
  • Hannah Bouwens finished 2nd in the shot put (Result - 25’7”)
  • Haley Tucker came in 3rd in the 3,000 meter run (Time - 13:11.2)
  • Sophie Kennett placed 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 19.4) and the long jump (Result - 14’2”).
