Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 15th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Homer

The Cortland Lady Purple Tigers defeated the Homer Lady Trojans in a county rivalry matchup at Cortland high school Monday night. Cortland won the game with a score of 7-4. 

Cortland’s goals were scored by Valerosa Gambitta (4 goals), Olivia Magin (2 goals), and Gabrielle Cranfield (1 goal). 

Homer’s goals were scored by Caitlin McCloy (2 goals), Maria Partis (1 goal), and Ella Spanbauer (1 goal). 

With this result, Cortland improved to an overall record of 5-9; while Homer fell to an overall record of 4-11. 

Up next, Cortland will host Mexico at Cortland high school on Thursday (May 18th) at 6pm. Homer is scheduled to take on Oswego on the road tonight (May 16th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Schools (OHSL Liberty League Large School Championships)

The Homer Trojans competed in the OHSL Liberty League Large School Championships at Chittenango High School Monday afternoon.

Up next, the Trojans will participate in the Cicero-North Syracuse Invitational at Cicero-North Syracuse high school this Friday (May 19th) at 4:30pm. This will be Homer’s last meet before the sectional championships. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Marathon

The Marathon Lady Olympians defeated Cincinnatus with a score of 12-7 Monday evening. 

With this result, Marathon ended their regular season with an overall record of 8-10; while Cincinnatus fell to an overall record of 9-7. 

Marathon was mainly led by Delaney Reilly (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s) and Marissa Allen (3 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s).

Cincinnatus was mainly led by Kaylee Brenchley (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Lucy Finch (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), and Piper Landers (2 hits & 4 RBI’s). 

According to Marathon head coach Jamie Bush, Marathon will now wait to see where they will be seeding in the Section IV Class D tournament.  

On the other hand, Cincinnatus will be scheduled to play Homer at Cincinnatus high school today (May 16th) at 4:30pm.

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to an overall record of 4-11 after losing a tough game against Marcellus with a score of 4-19. 

Homer was led by Cecelia Rappleyea (1 run & 3 hits), Alexandria Kellaway (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Catherine Apker (1 run & 2 hits), Allyson Verfuss (1 hit & 1 RBI), Lyla Read (1 hit & 1 RBI), Brooke Casterline (1 run), and Jenna Henderson (2 strikeouts thrown).

Marcellus was led by Chloe Kuttruff (3 runs, 4 hits & 3 RBI’s), Jillian O'Connor (4 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Carly Sears (4 runs & 1 hit), Carly Hopper (2 runs & 1 hit), Hannah Fagan (2 runs & 1 hit), Ameilia Novitsky (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Annabella Mondello (2 runs & 1 RBI), Brynnly Goldsworthy (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Avrie Hammond (2 hits & 10 strikeouts thrown), and Lilly Schultz (1 run).

Homer’s next game will be played today (May 16th) against Cincinnatus at Cincinnatus high school at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. DeRuyter

The McGraw Eagles won 16-11 against DeRuyter in order to improve to a 3-14 overall record. 

McGraw was led by Josslyn Eaton (1 run & 1 hit & 12 strikeouts thrown), Jaden Marshall (2 runs, 2 hits & 4 RBI’s), Katelynn Millard (3 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Adrianna Stacconi (3 runs & 1 hit), Haylee Bassett (2 runs & 4 hits), Leah Terwilliger (1 run, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Madison Sweeney (1 run), Hannah Wilson (2 runs & 1 hit), and Camdyn Caperton (1 run).

This was McGraw’s last scheduled game of the season.

The Cortland Purple Lady Tigers lost 2-4 against Central Square Monday evening. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 9-9. 

Cortland was led by Lauren Mott (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Mallory Turner (1 run), Aliza McCormick (1 hit & 1 RBI), Madison Thompson (1 hit), and Brenna Hogan (5 strikeouts thrown).

Central Square was led by Kayla Tarquinio (1 run & 2 hits), Payton St Clair (1 run & 2 hits), Emerson Widowski (1 run & 1 hit), Hannah Waldron (1 run & 1 RBI), Caitliyn Redeye (1 RBI & 15 strikeouts thrown), and Jamielyn Kelley (1 hit). 

Cortland is now scheduled to play their last game of the regular season at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Park against Syracuse this Wednesday (May 17th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. DeRuyter

The McGraw Eagles lost 3-11 against DeRuyter Monday evening, bringing their record down to 7-9. 

McGraw was led by Calob Sutton (2 runs & 1 hit), Jaydon Bassett (1 run, 1 hit, 1 RBI & 1 strikeout thrown), Riley VanLiew (2 hits & 1 RBI), Elijah VanDee (1 hit & 1 RBI), Blake Bergey (1 hit & 5 strikeouts thrown), Nathan Stiles (1 hit & 4 strikeouts thrown), and Brennan Wilson (1 RBI).

McGraw is now scheduled to host Otselic Valley at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex tonight (May 16th) at 5pm.

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Olympians defeated Groton Monday afternoon with a team score of 190-199. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).
