Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 16th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Cincinnatus

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated the Cincinnatus Lady Lions in a Cortland county matchup with a score of 21-14. 

With this result, Homer improved to a 5-11 record, while Cincinnatus fell to a 9-8 record. 

Homer’s runs were scored by Cecelia Rappleyea (1 homerun & 4 total runs), Catherine Apker (3 runs), Allyson Verfuss (3 runs), Melina Hage (3 runs), Alexandria Kellaway (3 runs), Jenna Henderson (2 runs), Lyla Read (2 runs), and Karigan Quaile (1 run). 

Cincinnatus’ runs were scored by Payton Gerrard (4 runs), Lucy Finch (1 homerun & 3 total runs), Madison Stover (2 runs), Jamber Aiken (2 runs), Jarisa Temple (2 runs), and Kayle Brenchley (1 run).

Homer pitcher Jenna Henderson threw 3 strikeouts in the game; while Cincinnatus pitchers Payton Gerrard (4 strikeouts) and Kayle Brenchley (2 strikeouts) combined to throw a total of 6 strikeouts from the mound.

Up next, Homer will play their last game of the regular season at home against Mexico on Thursday (May 18th) at 5pm; while Cincinnatus hosts their last game of the regular season today (May 17th) at 4:30pm against Brookfield. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Bishop Grimes

The Homer Trojans beat Bishop Grimes with a score of 5-3 in order to improve to a 9-7 record Tuesday evening. 

Homer was led by Mitchell Earle (3 runs & 1 hit), Jeffrey Stauber (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Tristan Allen (2 hits & 1 RBI), Anderson Read (1 run & 1 hit), Eli McMahon (1 hit & 1 RBI), Noah Young (1 hit & 1 RBI), Graydon Hickey (1 RBI), and Maddox Johnson (1 hit & 6 strikeouts thrown). 

Bishop Grimes was led by Bruno Kinsey (1 run & 4 hits), Frank Sgroi (1 run & 1 hit), Jon Farstler (1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Tristan Mancari (1 hit & 1 RBI), Aaron Nuzzo (1 run), Dante Piraino (1 hit), and William Markwood (7 strikeouts thrown).   

Homer is now scheduled to host Mexico at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex this Thursday (May 18th) at 5pm.

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Eagles defeated Otselic Valley in order to improve to an overall record of 8-9. McGraw won the game with a score of 15-5. 

The Eagles were led by Jaydon Bassett (1 run, 3 hits, 3 RBI’s & 4 strikeouts thrown), Blake Bergey (2 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Lucas Monroe (1 run & 2 hits), Blair Mulcahy (2 runs & 1 hit), Nathan Stiles (2 runs, 2 hits, 2 RBI’s & 3 strikeouts thrown), Calob Sutton (1 homerun, 4 total runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Nick Sutton (1 homerun & 1 RBI), Riley VanLiew (1 run & 1 hit), and Brennan Wilson (1 run & 1 hit). 

Note: individual stats for Otselic Valley were not made available by the time this article was written. 

McGraw’s next game will be played on the road against General Brown on Friday (May 19th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Oswego

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to an overall record of 4-12 after losing to Oswego with a final score of 9-17. 

Homer’s goals were scored by Maria Partis (3 goals), Isabelle Small (2 goals), Lilly Sorenson (1 goal), Brayden Partigianoni (1 goal), Emma Effinger (1 goal), and Sarah Olsenwik (1 goal). 

Oswego’s goals were scored by Kylie Fritton (5 goals), Mia Fierro (4 goals), Peyton Bond (2 goals), Aliana DiBlasi (2 goals), Cora Shiel (2 goals), Carolena Canale (1 goal), and Amanda Connelly (1 goal). 

Homer goalies Caitlin McCloy (4 saves) and Aislynn Cobb (4 saves) combined to make 8 total saves in the game; while Allyson Bruns made 5 saves for Oswego. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer Trojans lost 7-13 against Marcellus Tuesday night. With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 6-10. 

Homer was led by Cooper Swartz (2 goals & 1 assist), Mitchell Riter (1 goal & 2 assists), Hunter Riehlman (1 goal & 1 assist), Alexander Votra (1 goal & 1 assist), Evan Butts (1 goal), Reid Partis (1 goal), and Daniel Stiles (1 assist).

Marcellus was led by Chris Doshna (3 goals & 2 assists), Doryn LeClair (2 goals & 3 assists), ​​Jimmy Cox (2 goals & 1 assist), Adam Rayfield (2 goals & 1 assist), Nick Rayfield (1 goal & 1 assist), Samuel Barney (1 goal), Jake Kermes (1 goal), and Damyn LeClair (1 goal).

This was Homer’s last game of the regular season. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Cincinnatus vs. DeRuyter Valley

The Cincinnatus Lions played DeRuyter Tuesday afternoon. Cincinnatus lost the match with a close team score of 262-237. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).
